What is the best way to get from the ship to a hotel in Istanbul? Are there taxis readily available or is it wiser to pre-book?

I'd arrange something through your hotel. The taxis around the port are some of the less honest taxi drivers I've come across!

Where is your hotel? If you need a taxi or van you should arrange it ahead of time. But depending on the location and how willing you are to drag your own luggage there may be other options.

We thought it would be easy to grab a taxi when we disembarked with all our luggage in Istanbul; however, there were 4 in our party and the taxi drivers with the larger vehicles did not want to take us to our hotel because they could make more money off taking people to the airport. Since we had all our luggage, we did not want to take the tram. We ended up paying the taxi driver with the larger vehicle the same fare that he would earn going to the airport because it was cheaper than taking 2 smaller vehicles to our hotel.
