Pompei and Sorrento

I'm still trying to decide if we should do private tour (shared with small group) or Celebrity's shore excursion to Pompei and Sorrento. We would much more prefer the private tour, but I have read so much about the terrible traffic jams, that it makes me nervous that we could possibly miss the boat.

Take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii then you don't have to worry about traffic. Last time we were there we were able to hire a guide on the spot. Of you could just buy a good guide book and go totally DIY.

Trains in Italy are so easy - the ticket machines have an option for language and you can choose to buy your tickets in English. Look out for the food and drink sellers on the way into Pompeii they will tell you that there is no food and drinks available inside - this is not true. They sell an overpirced and not tasty product. The cafe inside is much nicer.

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes - walking all day on the paving rocks is tough.
