Iceland car rental - Gas stations?

We have a deisel van rented at KEF airport next month. A few questions on filling it up with gas...

- Are the gas stations near the airport (Keflavik) open 24 hours? We have a 7:40am flight thus we'll be returning the van around 5am.

- Are they typically pay-at-the-pump, and take US credit cards? Or do we go inside to the counter and present the card before filling up?

- Is Deisel clearly differentiated from regular? And does it say "Deisel" or will there be a different Islandic word to look for?

Yeah, I debated on which of the two to put it in. It's kinda 50-50 as to which cruise itineraries Iceland is more included with.

If you look her http://www.olis.is/english/stations you can see the Olis stations that are open 24 hours.

If you find Keflavik and search for Olis, you will see them all - there seems to be a 24 hour station near, but outside the airport. You may know that diesel is very expensive there at around $1.50 a litre. ($5.68 per US gallon)

At todays exchange rate..diesel at my local Asda is about $1.44 perlitre so almost as dear as Iceland,once you get up into the Scottish highlands and islands it will be dearer than Iceland

We rented a car last month in Iceland and had quite the gas buying adventure. We saw the Olis station when leaving the airport but could not find it anywhere upon our return. We were running a little late so decided to just take the hit from the car rental company but the guy at the counter pointed out 2 lone pumps sitting in a lot that he said were for consumer use.

Drove over there but for the life of me could not remember my credit card PIN and I could not read the display, as it was in Icelandic (funny how something you do on a weekly basis becomes confusing in a different language). It was cold, dark and windy (11pm for a 1am flight) and had been awake for about 48 hours so again decided to buy the gas from the rental car company. Let's just say not one of my smartest decisions on the trip! :eek:

So yes, they are pay at the pump, you can use a US credit card IF you can remember your pin but I'm sorry I can't recall about diesel. Best advice is make sure you somehow know where that Olis station is right outside the airport!

If you look on Google maps, there are a number of Olis filling stations marked near the airport.

When I visited Iceland last year I found everyone to be very helpful and English is widely spoken, so if in doubt ask.
