Luggie's In the USA?

Does anyone know if the Luggie scooter is available in the US? I've only seen the website for the UK and they don't ship to the US, so I'm wondering if it's available here? I'm looking to get one for my upcoming cruise, and the one I'm interested in is the Luggie Elite.

Thanks.

I purchased one yesterday. I usually use my GoGo Elite, but now, I also purchased a new car, and my scooter lift cannot be put into that vehicle, so I was looking for a lightweight scooter I could fold and put in the trunk without the need of a Bruno lift. Being around 54lbs, and folding so nicely, the Luggie seemed like a great choice. I can fold it up, tip it on it's side and then roll it into the car. I also purchased the hard side bag so that I can fold it up and have it put on the plane.

I'm new to cruising but am becoming an old hand with the Luggie. We have been on one cruise around New Zealand out of Sydney on Radiance of the Seas and took the Luggie with us. There were absolutely no access problems on the ship (although dis/embarkation ramps were sometimes challenging). I will say that the floors on the ship were carpeted/smooth/inlayed which looked very nice but were quite jarring to roll over the transitions as the Luggie has no suspension and solid tyres.

We flew from Hobart to Sydney and return and on arrival in Sydney discovered that Jetstar had damaged the scooter - not enough to make it inoperable but enough to be very annoying. Did not get any satisfaction at all from the airline.

I have had the Luggie for over a year now and it has widened my horizons considerably. It folds up and fits neatly in the back of the car. It has made many things possible for me again since becoming an incomplete quad three years ago.

Next cruise is South Pacific in October and then Perth to Sydney over the top next February, both on Celebrity Solstice

Surprised to hear that you needed a Bruno lift for your GoGo Elite. I have a GoGo elite and it breaks down easily to fit into the cargo area of my Honda CR-V .... no need for a lift.

Here's a link to a video to show you how it breaks down just incase you're not aware .

The break down part begins around the 56 second mark on the video

Good Luck with your new Luggie. I test rode one at an Accessibility Expo and really liked it but the price is just too expensive .

Darcie! Glad to hear you found what you needed.

Please report back as I have a friend who is considering the same sort of product.

I'm sending it back. It's the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE scooter I've ever experienced. Seriously, it's downright awful. For the price, it felt very cheap, the tiller was so flimsy. The other problem for me was the foot bed. My feet are deformed from the polio, so my right foot turns way out right. There's no way for my foot to be safely on the foot bed because it tilts upward, and my feet have no movement either laterally or up and down. Consequently, it was downright painful for me. Plus the seat was totally uncomfortable. It was wide enough, but not long enough to support my thighs. Again, painful. And the seat was plastic, and not soft at all. So, no, I can't recommend the Luggie. I now have a Mobie, which works and feels good for me.

Yes, I know it breaks down into four pieces, but for me, it's a giant pain in the behind to take everything apart and put it back together. My legs/hips are such that I can't bend over and take things apart and put them into the vehicle. If I try and do that, I fall over. Not a fun experience. With a folding scooter, I just have to put 2 wheels on the back of the trunk and slightly lift it and roll it into the trunk.

But thanks for the suggestions.

I have MS so standing and balance is an issue for me as well. Not certain what type of vehicle you have so not certain if this will work for you. I sit on the back of my Honda CR-V and am able to disassemble/load everything except the rear wheel section while sitting down. By the time I have to load the rear wheel section I have to stand up anyway as I'm sitting in the spot that part gets loaded into. Than when taking it out of the car the first section I remove while standing is the the rear wheels than I can sit while taking out/assembling the rest of the sections.

Darcy, very sorry it was a complete failure for you. I would be concerned that your damaged right foot would have been at serious risk in such a situation. You don't need more trouble!

Oh Penny, I know. I've broken bones in that foot so many times that I have to be especially careful. Right now, I'm wearing a bootie on that foot because I slipped a tiny bit in the shower and the foot hit the shower wall, and I broke two bones. My specialist said I have the bones of a 5 year old in that foot, and they break easily. It sucks being this way, but it's the only way I know.

Darcie, sadly it's a price you keep having to pay for being in the wrong place and the wrong time and catching polio. Young people don't even know what that word means!

I'm old enough to remember way too much of those terrible years.

:( I, too, have had a Luggie for about one year. Sold it this past spring for pretty much a give-away! Resale is impossible - Classified Ad, Craig's List and in our community... Had one inquiry who offered to 'take it off of my hands' for $200. He said I would have a problem and he was certainly right - too many available used.

Very unhappy with mine. I agree on several aspects: Very uncomfortable. I am 5'5" - it felt too short in length for me, felt like my legs were pressed into the tiller with too narrow of a base for my feel. So, therefore, you sit with your knees at a severe right angle, feet flat on the floor and unable to move from the waist down lest you slip off the floor base. Agree, tiller was flimsy and wobbled.

We purchased it for the claim of being lightweight to lift. Did not find this to be so. Very difficult for both my husband or I to bend, disassemble and lift into the rear of our vehicle. Ride was bumpy on solid surfaces and agree seat was uncomfortable. Definitely would not recommend -

the motorized shopping carts in the grocery store are much more comfortable to drive and you are not cramped into an awful sitting position.

Purchase was a big mistake on my part - thought I had researched them enough..... hope this helps you all.

We impulsively purchased a Luggie for a relative, probably a mistake. I use a Pride GoGo Elite Traveler Plus scooter. I wish we would have purchased a Pride for this relative. When she first tried the Luggie, she liked it, but she has a lot of trouble with the seat release mechanism. I tried it myself and found the ride to be rough and experienced the same problem with the slanted floor base; very uncomfortable for me, I'm 5'7". We'll see how it goes, but if she doesn't want it, maybe we'll just keep it as a spare.

Yes, we got our Luggie from www.gomobilityscooters.com and it has been so great!!! We just got back from Alaska and the Luggie was perfect. I was able to keep up with my whole family and not miss a thing. What was best was that I could do everything myself. I felt so independent. I would highly recommend Go Mobility Scooters. They had a sale when I purchased it, don't know if they still have one. Enjoy your travels!

My husband has had his Luggie for over a year and has used it on about 5 cruises. He also has the suitcase which was good for air travel. He ordered his on the internet.

I'm a Luggie user. I've had one for about 2 years. I'm a frequent airline traveler on business and will take my Luggie on it's first cruise in October on the QM2.

Yes, they did at first tell me I had to book a handicapped cabin. I'm going with my mother, and we are booked into a penthouse cabin. We are both Luggie users. I explained that the Luggie is a British product, we can each handle the scooter ourselves, and it folds up. The Cunard rep checked with someone and approved it.

I love my Luggie. I also have a larger scooter that comes apart in pieces. Yes, it is more comfortable for sitting in with longer stretches, but there are things you can do to increase that comfort while sitting on the Luggie. I got a gel pad like what competition bicycle riders use for my Luggie. It's very nice, and while it isn't mounted permanently, mine has a handle in the middle for easy folding and un folding. I put on a bicycle rear view mirror and bell since there is no horn.

The ease by which I can go places and navigate through big airports like MIA and LAS is wonderful. I travel a lot internationally and it's never been a problem.

The narrow foot board doesn't bother me, but I can understand why it would be an issue for some folks. I'm a big woman (upper 200's) and I ride the Deluxe model with no problem. I've been considering upgrading to the Elite since it has a higher weight rating and better battery. If I don't do anything else, I am going to get another battery for the upcoming cruise.

Yes, there are rare occasions my Luggie has a problem with steep inclines and it has to be pushed, but there haven't been many. I'm hoping if I upgrade or get the more powerful battery it will solve the problem.

I can handle it easily for putting in my car, but I also have a lift which was installed to carry the larger scooter. The Luggie fits easily into rental cars and taxi cabs. When I'm traveling with someone, my Luggie is much easier for my companion to either help me with or wait for me while it's being examined by TSA.

Hope this helps someone. Oh, some of your scooter rental places will let you rent a scooter for a few days so you can check it out for yourself.
