KellyOKelly Posted October 9, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 9, 2015 We'll be on the Princess in about 9 days (yay!) and stopping in PV. Do any of you have any ballpark prices for the following: small hoop silver earrings or any other earrings that aren't super fancy, leather purses, leather belts? Street vendors, flea markets, stores are all possibilities. We're trying to figure out how much money to take. Thanks so much!
MSN-Travelers Posted October 9, 2015 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2015 Not sure if you are shopping for quality goods for yourself of souvenirs for others. Are you opportunity shopping or looking for specific items? Cash is king in most Mexican ports, including Vallarta. It is hard to tell you what to bring ashore for shopping. USD's are widely accepted but you will likely get a poor exchange rate from street/beach vendors. Established stores/vendors will give decent rates. Know that use of USD'S will get Pesos in change so do not use USD BILLS greater than a 10 for souvenir shopping. ATMs are everywhere. Shop, negotiate your best cash price and get the Pesos you need for the item(s). Leather goods can be found just about anywhere; however, be very wary of any "silver" jewelry from street/beach vendors. You will find some good quality leather goods but you will also run across a lot of cheap, for stupid tourists, goods too. If you find something with a price "too good to be true", it is. Enjoy! joeyancho Posted October 10, 2015 #3 Share Posted October 10, 2015 Buy goods in Mexico always involves a negotiation. NEVER pay the initial price. Usually they will take about half. Remember you are in control. You have money.

SadieN Posted October 11, 2015 #5 Share Posted October 11, 2015 In PV a few days ago. Stores at the pier were giving 16:1 dollars to pesos. Their prices were the same as in town. Always negotiate. The more you buy the better you can do. The unofficial cambio just outside the ship fence was giving 15.5:1. The restaurant gave us the same.
