Gatwick to Southampton

Recommended Posts

We want to try Virgin Airlines, but from our departure city it flies to Gatwick. Everyone tells me that it takes longer to get to Southampton.

Has anyone flown into Gatwick and taken a cab to Southampton? We're looking for a company that will pick us up and take us to our hotel in Southampton right outside the pier. How long did it take?

About 90 miles, could be little more than 90 minutes at quiet times, mebbe 2.5 hours at busy times.

That's some 20 to 30 minutes longer than Heathrow.

A pre-booked car will cost you vaguely around £120 to £130, a taxi from the rank at Gatwick will cost you your house.

Try http://www.smithsforairports.com or http://www.westquaycars.com

Both are based at the Southampton end & are frequently recommended on this forum by those who've used them.

The train is an inexpensive and surprisingly easy option.

Station is actually in the south terminal of Gatwick airport, direct hourly service, journey time around 2 hours, fare about £8 to £10 per person. No big steps onto the train, quite a scenic route.

Then a short £5 to £8 taxi hop from Southampton central station to any cruise terminal or city centre hotel.

No direct train service on sundays.

We've happily flown Virgin. And Gatwick isn't quite so much of a zoo as Heathrow.

Do check return flight times - for same-day at the end of your cruise aim for a flight after 1pm.

The train from Gatwick to Southampton is so easy and peaceful, it's an option worth considering. To get to the station simply take the elevator from the south terminal to the platform.

Our cruise ends in Southampton on Thursday and we plan to stay in London until Monday. We already booked a transfer from the cruise that drops us off in Victoria station.

We'll consider the train option to go from Gatwick to Southampton. But now sure, having a car waiting for you sometimes is worth the extra $$$$.

Thank you.:)
