We have heard there is a 2Euro gondola ride that does a very brief but enjoyable gondola trip that locals use to go a short distance.

Can anyone enlighten us about this treat. Where do we pick it up? Still 2Euros?

We will be there in October this year.

The one we used looked similar to a gondola but it had been gutted. There were no seats so you stand as you cross the canal.

We had been wondering around lost for a couple of hours and thought we were getting close to our hotel, but apparently not! A local and his wife said to follow them as they were heading to a restaurant n our direction. The first stop was a dock and we got into this traghetto. My mother was 82 at the time, and she couldn'the keep her balance. The 'gondolier' ordered her to SIT. There were no seats! He wanted her to sit on the rim of the boat! So we bounced across the waves in the canal, laughing hysterically with my mother perched precariously on the edge. We still laugh about it. It would have been worth 100E. for that experience!

As Mapleleaves stated, this is the traghetto. The locals stand during crossing but you are allowed to sit.

To my knowledge, there are 8 places where one can take the traghetto (ride takes only a few minutes - look for yellow or white "Traghetto" signs):

Ferrovia - Piazzale Roma

Fondaco dei Turchi - San Marcuola

Pescheria - S Sofia

Fondamente del Vin - Riva del Carbon

S. Toma - S Angelo

Ca' Rezzonico - S. Samuele

S. Gregorio - S Maria del Giglio

Punta della Dogana - S Marco
