Hawaiian Air LAX-AKL SYD-LAX ?

Hello: We are thinking of flying on Hawaiian Airlines from LAX -HNL-AKL then SYD-HNL-LAX. Leaving around Feb 10 return on Feb 28 2015

We will do a 23 hr overnight in HNL on the outbound and have about 10 daylight hrs between flights on the inbound.

What happens to our luggage in HNL?

Do we clear immigration and customs in HNL or LAX on our return flights?

You go through US border controls at HNL; you'll take your bags through customs then re-check them for the flight to LAX. Don't know if HNL has an dedicated re-check desk right after customs or if you'll have to go to the departure section and go through the whole security/bag check business there.
