Civitavecchia (Rome) - Self Drive on a December Monday - Ideas please

Hi,

For an upcoming cruise at the end of the year, we will be calling at Civitavecchia for the day, 8am to 6pm. It is a Monday.

The plan is to hire a car and do a self drive.

However, we found out that a good number of sights are closed on Monday. For example, Tarquinia and Ostia Antica.

Wonder if anybody has ideas for us, in terms of self-drive. We have spent some days in Rome before, so we don't plan to go to Rome.

Many thanks!

In Tivoli Villa Adriana is open on Mondays, but not Villa d'Este.

You could go to Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio.

Or you could do a drive up the coast, checking out Monte Argentario and Talamone. These places will likely be pretty quiet in December but I find beach areas in the off season lovely.

For the truly unusual you could check out the hilltop town of Calcata, which became an artist's colony in the 70's: http://www.calcata.info/enindex.html

Viterbo is an easy drive, although the museums there will also be closed on Mondays.
