Island Escape

This will be our first time cruising the Mediteranean. Wondering if the ports are similar to the Caribean in that it is easy to pick up mini cabs,buses tour guides etc, or is it better to go with the organized shore excursions? We are going on the Mediteranean Adventure, followed byEscape to the Mediteranean, in June. Any advise?

Most ports will have taxis etc. there for you. No so sure about tour guides there like in the Caribbean. As for tours it all depends on where you re going and what you want to see.

Some ports will be excellent just to get off the ship and be able to walk around the towns.

Some places, you will be better off either getting the ships tour, or pre booking your own, if your going to a place that you are especially looking forward to visit as you will not get the full benefit by yourselves.

For instance Rome is excellent with a proper guide who knows exactly where to take you and be able to explain all the sites in detail.

Saying that, all of these ports are good for a DIY tour if you do your homework.

If you list your ports of call perhaps we can help you further.....other than that I would say that most of the med ports are easy to do it yourself either on HOHO buses or public transport . :)

We have just come back from the spirit of the med cruise. We booked the excursions on board and we are glad we went with the ships excursions. Someone was taken ill on board so we had to drop them off in Menorca which we weren't meant to stop at. This meant we got into Corsica late but the ships excursions just changed the times for them. Had people had booked elsewhere then they would have missed it and been unable to get a refund. Fog in Barcelona also delayed us by 4 hours. This meant all ships excursions were cancelled for there with a full refund.
