Gothenburg recommendations

We are stopping in Gothenburg (Goteborg) Sweden for a day on our Baltic cruise.

Does anyone know if ships dock close to the town? Should we do the ship tour or is it okay to do on your own.

Any insights appreciated!

Do you happen to know the distance from where the Royal Princess will dock (apparently about a 30 minute bus ride to the City Centre) to the Volvo Museum? One description I've read says one can walk back to the ship (300 metres?) and one says don't walk anywhere in the port as it is dangerous.

you can't walk from the Royal Princess to town. the port is far away and in an industrial area. Princess charged us $20 pp/rt for the ride, which we thought was excessive but we had no choice. Gothenburg is a pretty and clean city. easy to walk around, we didn't find much of interest but it is a pleasant place.

There is supposed to sale of tickets at the Volvo museum according to Västtrafik website which means that you should be able to use public transport to/from Göteborg city centre.

I agree..use the ship offered transportation into the city center..to us it was worth it...Sorry but Gothenburg was my least favorite port...we arrived into town and virtually nothing was open and there wasn't much to do..we headed back to the ship by noon...I wish we had at least done the Volvo tour...this port took us by surprise as when we booked RCI had been doing Oslo..so we didn't plan anything and thought we would just enjoy walking the town...we were wrong.

Hello Desdichado62 -We arrive in Gothenburg on Saturday, July 19 and will be there from 7am – 2 pm We will need to take shuttle bus from the cruise into town. Below is what we would like to do/see.

1) Paddan Boat Tours (160 SK) $24 – (50 minutes) Departs from: Kungsportsplatsen (rated #1TripA)opens at 10:30 a.m.

2) Saluhallen, Kungstorget, is a charming indoor food hall Try the big Kanelbulle (Cinnamon bun)

3) Trädgårdsföreningen, 7/56 TA picturesque garden in city centre nice collection of roses No entrance fee during off season, otherwise 20 SEK. Can picnic

4) Skansen Kronan (Crown Keep) is a hilltop fortification, southwest of the city center, built in the 17th century. used as a prison during the 19th century military museum in the 20th Today, restaurant and conference facility. In the old army barracks next to it, there is a summer café serving home baked goods and ice cream

5) Close to Skansen Kronan is Haga, a city district with picturesque wooden houses from the 19th century.

Should our first stop be the Tourist Office on Kungsportsplatsen? Are we too ambitious with our itinerary? Do you have any suggestions/ideas or things we should add or eliminate?

As others have said Gothenburg is not a great tourist port and you would not want to walk in from where you berth. We took the ships shuttle and took a bus from there to the Botanic Gardens. We were blessed with a warm sunny day so it was a good outing.

I might be too late but your itinerary might be a little bit too ambitious. It's hard for me tell you what to leave out however

Trädgårdsföreningen is in the wrong direction if you want to go Skansen Kronan and Haga.

So perhaps goto Skansen Kronan and Haga after visiting Saluhallen and then if you still have time visit Trädgårdsföreningen as the last thing to do.

Quite expensive though. Lunch (today's special) is around SEK 135 (~$20USD) at the restaurants. Dinner about the double of that.

I am assuming the Royal Princess will be berthing at the same place as the Brilliance of the Seas did on our visit to Gothenberg.

The Volvo museum a couple of hundred yards from the ship. It is situated next to the Volvo corporate headquarters in landscaped grounds. The walk to the museum is not through a dangerous port area. The museum is worth a visit.

There is a small marina nearby and footpaths along the shore overlooking the entrance to the port within easy walking distance from the ship.

My partner and I after visiting the museum went for a stroll along the shore. She found it relaxing and tranquil. We both enjoyed the calm atmosphere a nice break from the numbers on a ship. Passed the time just watching the shipping and sea birds.

We have not been into the City and both thought that the restful time doing not a lot was one of the best memories of the cruiser.

i was thinking it was a 1 day boat ride but it is a 4 day cruise !

after our 17 day transatlantic from ft laud we arrive in copenhagen

may 2 where we plan to stay for 2 nights - then go from copenhagen

to gothenburg - stay 3 nights - then to stockholm for 5 or 6 nights -

don't think we'll try to rent a car - so will probably travel by train

do you think we should try to book our trains from calif before we leave

or is it easy enough to do it in copenhagen and gothenburg ?

we are flying to calif from stockholm - hopefully the non stop on norwegian

either may 12 or 14

my maternal grandparents from frillesas & surteby (would love to go to these 2 places

if we could find/hire a driver while in gothenburg) left from gothenburg to copenhagen

to nyc to boston 130 years ago !!

since this is probably the only time we'll get to sweden am

trying to spend as much time there as possible !!

I would recommend you to book the train before you leave. The cheapest tickets are usually released 3 months before departure.

However there are some things you need to be aware of,it might limited space on the trains for luggage. Especially on SJ's X2000 and SJ3000 trains.

There have also been many delays the past years for the railway traffic in general.

Perhaps you could consider flying from Gothenburg to Stockholm, there are several airlines (SAS, Norwegian and Malmö Aviation) that flies from Gothenburg to Stockholm.

As for the visits to Frillesås and Surteby, I don't know of any car services in Gothenburg but perhaps you could rent a car and drive yourself?

3 of great grandparents & my grandmother were born -

& possibly frillesas where great grand mother & her son

my grandfather were born but did not stay after his birth (1862)

The House of the Emigrants in Gothenburg is a migration centre for research and meetings between people. It’s an independent forum for everyone, regardless of sex, nationality and religion.

 

The aim of the activity is to contribute to increased knowledge about migration, understanding and tolerance between different groups and nations.

 

The premises are, as it should be, located in the Customs House down by the harbour. This is where all the emigrants were shipped out during

the great emigration period from 1850 to 1930. Every emigrant had to first pass the Customs House to show their emigrant contract.

The Customs House was built on the “French lot” in 1866 and the house got its name from the custom that was located here for many years.

They also have exhibits about the emigration.

both my grandparents left from there separately in 1883 & 1885 -

my main reason for wanting to spend a few days in gothenburg !!:)

Can you help me please. We will be in gothenburg on may 8 arriving on Serenade of Seas. From what I have read, we will take a shuttle to the city. Our top priorities for the day ar Feskekorka, Haga, Liseberg & Lilla Bommen Harbour. Can you advise where we will be dropped off in the city & in what order we should viit these place to make the best use of our time and the closeness to each other. We are in port from 8 am to 5 pm. any help you can give is greatly apprecialte. . I did look at the Stinsen sightseeing train but they do not start service until may 14. also can you advise where the hop on hop off bus route starts if we should decide to use this service.
