JERMEY Posted June 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2015 Hi, Will be on Princess Cruise in Sept. Ship stops in Astoria. Any suggestions of what to do there. Is there any places near the port to visit? Should we rent a car, or are there taxis available for touring? Thanks
PNW Traveler Posted June 8, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 8, 2015 Astoria has a super Maritime Museum. The facility is good and the displays are very well done. I'd allow two hours. It's not the standard "model ships" museum, but has ships you can board as well as a historical museum. As a center for shipping, logging and fishing, a few of Astoria's early pioneers acquired significant wealth and built large Victorian style homes, some of which are open for tours. I would consult Trip Advisor for specifics on the historic homes. Astoria still has a fishing fleet and excellent fresh seafood can be found in local restaurants and markets. Although you won't be able to take fresh king salmon back to the ship, you may be able to find smoked or canned salmon in dockside markets. As you stroll the docks you may see Stellar sea lions in residence. They are fun to watch, even though the local fishermen don't like them. (The sea lions love salmon.) SadieN Posted June 9, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2015 (edited) Astoria has lots to do. The trolley, Astoria Tower, several brewpubs, revitalized Main Street and theatre, firehouse museum, maritime museum etc We like to get fish and chips from the BowPicker. It's a boat parked in a lot across the street from the maritime museum. Josephson's Smokehouse has wonderful smoked fish in cans and to eat there. Read up on the Columbia Bar river pilots.
