Mayan Ruins

Yes.

Ek Balam and Coba both have pyramids that tourists can climb.

Coba pyramid is rougher (the steps) but has a sturdy rope down the middle. You can rent a bike or take a bicycle taxi pedaled by a guide to get around the site. Much of the site has not been extensively excavated. Ek Balam pyramid is in better condition and part way up there is a terrace extensive sculpture. It is a fairly small site, but beautiful.

Coba is probably a slightly shorter trip from the cruise port, but either would perhaps be pushing it time-wise on a short port stop.

I was looking at Chacchoben or Kohunlich. Not familiar with Ek Balam or Coba.

You asked about pyramids in the Yucatan where your son would be allowed to climb.

There are many Mayan ruins in the Yucatan. You might want to get onto YouTube with him and look at some of the videos of the various ruins to see what each looks like and familiarize yourself with the choices.

Chacchoban is reasonable drive from the port and there is a section that can be climbed. A reasonable height so most can do it, but may not necessarily provide the experience he's looking for.

This is the Gran Basamento at Chakoban:

Here's a picture of Coba, the tallest (until a very recent discovery) pyramid in the Yucatan:

This is Ek Balam's pyramid:

  • 3 weeks later...

We climbed to the top of 3 ruins, and viewed many other ruins, at Dzibanche and Kinichna last week with The Native Choice from Costa Maya. Wow, what a great tour. Only 12 on the tour and we were the only people at either site. Highly recommend.
