I saw on the Carnival site that there is a parking lot but it is $18 a night. Are there other options that are safe and nearby?

Fulton Parking Garage. Book online, print your receipt and give it to the garage and it's like $10/day. If you wait until the day of your cruise and pay at the garage I think they charge $14/day. They offer a free shuttle to and from the port. They'll load and unload your bags. When you get off the shuttle the porter will be right there to take your bags.
