Iko (sp?) Pranic is wonderful.

He was my maitre d' two Januarys ago in the QG on QE.

Looking forward to your impressions of the QE which I found to be quite pleasant.

That's a nice recommendation. It's good when you have a nice maitre d, it makes a difference. That's one thing I noticed about the Britannia Restaurant, I never had any interaction with the maitre d, but in the Grills you do. Patu (btw) is very good.

I'm looking forward to my impressions of QE too! That probably doesn't make any sense, but yes, I am sure I will very much enjoy QE. My only concern is having a cabin way up the back. Don't get me wrong, I love the location, but I am slightly apprehensive about the movement.

Patu is great, too. He was replaced by Osman in NYC at the start of the Christmas cruise. We had Oliver and Ionel in PG - they were great to us.

I had 5195 for the Southampton-New York portion of the 2012 world cruise. It was a great stateroom with a large balcony. The crossing was very rough, however, and there was enough motion in the stateroom for an amusement park. I'm a good sailor who never gets seasick; in fact, I always welcome heavy seas on Queen Mary 2 and the great QE2. On QE, while I was fine and enjoyed the experience, I was keenly aware that the QE & QV were not meant for high seas passages as a norm. I remember watching QV struggle through the large sea swells from QE2 when QV sailed to NY for the first time in tandem with QE2.

Are you far aft as well? How far are you going on the cruise? Home to Australia? I did a full world cruise a few years ago, and most of the voyage from New York to Sydney was fairly calm, even the Tasman Sea. You'll be fine with the seas.

Ico is very nice and I find him more personable and friendly than Osman, but I think it's down to personal choice. If Fifi is still one of the head waiters on board, she's great and really enjoys her job.

I've never been in PG on the QE before and will be joining in Dubai. Does anyone know who the Maitre d' will be on this final leg of the world cruise and if he's friendly or not as some tend to just go through the motions.

My overall favourite Maitre d' is Raul on the QV who tends to stay in PG and I won't book QG if I know he's in PG.

I've seen a later version of this list with the rotations after the 14th March. The memory isn't as good as it used to be (who am I kidding, it was never great :p) but I think Rynd was returning in Sydney. I'll try find it but it's on these boards somewhere. :)

Here's the list, I think the Commodore is going onto QE or QV after his leave, rather than QM2.

I'm as far aft as you were for the 2012 world cruise. And yes, I am going back to Australia. Not long now.

I certainly don't doubt your experience, but on most (if not all) of my QM2 voyages, the Britannia maître d' stopped by our table to ask how everything was, and exchanged a few sociable comments. No time for a prolonged conversation, but considering the ground the maître d' needs to cover in the MDR, I think they do a fairly good job, all things considered.

That's good to hear, the maître d should make an effort to come around and speak with guests, doesn't matter what restaurant. Glad to hear that my experience wasn't the norm.

  • 1 month later...

Looks like there will be a significant change of crew on May 9, when I board QM2! Need to come back and look to see who will be Captain, Hotel manager, Entertainment Director, and Senior MD. At least the voyage sales specialist is set!

Does anyone know who will captain Queen Mary 2's 2014 world voyage?

So far as I know Captain Oprey has command at the moment.

He is indeed still the Captain as of today. Ship arrived in Sydney this morning and sails at 2030 tonight.
