Cartenega fort tour

It is my understanding that there are tour guides available outside the fort that you can hire. My first question is whether or not you actually need a guide or can you do the fort yourself? Secondly, has anyone ever hired a guide just for the fort ahead of time that they would recommend? i am a little hesitant about just using someone from outside the fort.

We did the fort on our own. There is a history movie shown in the "hospital" that is very informative. Then we just explored on our own. Lots of tunnels, we spent a couple of ours just wandering around. If you watch the movie (~15 minutes, free) I don't think you need a guide.
