Fire on Mount Maunganui , Tauranga ...

The walking tracks on the Mount are currently closed as firefighters dampen down and clean up after a fire on the mountain last night. It broke out at midnight and 3 people had to rescued...sound a bit suspect? It was on the ocean side and even after recent rain managed to burn out about 1 sq km.

No cruise ships in today ... Diamond Princess is due tomorrow .

Definitely sounds a bit suss! People playing with fire where they shouldn't be?

Shame though, NZ bush doesn't regenerate as quickly as Aussie bush does. It will look unsightly for quite a while I suspect.

Diamond Princess is due in Tauranga tomorrow .

Last time she called , the Mount was closed by a fire. Now it closed as the walking track around the base is too dangerous with the king tides and enormous swells they are having at the moment. The day before yesterday a lifesaver was swept off the rocks and out to sea . His a body was washed back in the next day.

The beach is also closed until further notice.

We had friends who went to the Mount over the weekend and they got knocked over in the surf.:eek:
