Hello From The Summit

HawaiiApril

Recommended Posts

We are heading north this morning and it is a beautiful day, bright sun and just a tad chilly. We had a horrific time boarding as there was some type of problem with customs. We sat in a room for over 3 hours waiting to board! They even brought out food. There were people still boarding during the drill and the ship sailed an hour late. It is a beautiful ship and our FV cabin is wonderful. I have my laptop and will be signing on now and then - til later..

Til our next cruise

HawaiiApril, I hope you read this by Wednesday. I'm curious about Icy Strait point & Hoonah, how is this port, are they organized yet? What activity, if any, are you planning there?

Boten, I can't tell you much, will know more Wed evening after we've been there. We have whale watching excursion tickets sitting here and I've heard good things from the people who have already been there. We are really looking forward to becoming a part of history.

LUCKY you
I have been watching the Summit for the last few weeks via webcam. Looks pretts fantastic
WE have 9129 for the repositioning on September 17 and then we are supposed to go to 9181 for the Panama portion. If you have a chance, please let me know if the overhang is as ENORMOUS as it appears.
We are waitlisted for your wonderful FV cabin. This will be our third trip on this beauty.
And if you are speaking to Simon, ask him how much longer his current assignment is. I am fingers crossed that he will be on our month long experience. (that ought to make him think RETIREMENT!)
Thanks
Evana

HawaiiApril, I'll look up for your probable post Wednesday evening (my early Thursday). We have an FV too for the Summit, July 16.

She left from Vancouver -- see the schedule and the bridge web-cam at http://www.kroooz-cams.com/summit/north.htm. Our cruise, departing Seward June 11th, will be the first southbound one-way for Summit this season.

Hi - we are docked in Skagway. There are 3 other ships here right now and it looks like we were last. We were supposed to dock at 9am but at 7am when I woke up, we were already docked. There is quite a walk into town from what I can see because we seem to be on an "outside" pier away from town. There is probably shuttle service. The food has been very good in the dining room and the buffet. The service has been improving every night in the dining room. The crew is sincerely friendly, but little English is spoken. Our cabin steward is Rosidi and I don't think he has understood a word I've said. The weather is beautiful, a light jacket is all we will need and we have made good use of the great balcony. I brought too many clothes, it hasn't been near as cold as I expected.

HawaiiApril,

We got off the Summit for a post cruise package just before you got on. Some in our group saw a crew member taken off in handcuffs. At the hotel we saw a Celebrity rep. who said that drugs were found on board. That was the cause of the delay in boarding.
The Summit was great. Hope you have as good a time as we did.

HawaiiApril, if you have a moment, could you report to someone (Purser's Desk?) that the Summit's bridge web-cam seems to be inoperative? It's been showing the same scene since about 4am (ship time) yesterday (Monday, June 7th). I sure need my daily "Summit fix!"

Hi. My parents are going July 16th (they missed last year's due to power outage). I'm diligently reading your posts to see what type of excursions you go on. They still haven't chosen any yet. What do you think of Capt. Larry. Have a wonderful time!

Hi,

Hope your cruise is going well. I wanted to ask you about Skagway. I am thinking about the dog sledding and either booking thru Temsco or the cruise ship. Did you all or anyone there do this and if so can you tell me if it is worth the cost?

Thanks for answering so many of our questions.

Walter

HawaiiApril,

Thanks for the running commentary. We will be on Summit southbound in August, and between your posts and the kroooz cams, it's really helping get us psyched - we were just on Summit in April for the first time and loved the ship. But as LoneStar72 mentioned, would you mind mentioning the "stuck" cams?

Thanks again, and we hope that you continue to have a great time - just save some nice weather for us...

Hi everyone, I have been off the ship all day and don't have much time to write but will try to answer a couple of the questions.

Pefel33 - Thanks for that info, it makes sense.

Lonestar - I will go to the desk tonight and tell them about the web cams.

There has been no theme nights except for the 50's sock hop last night, some people dress in poodle skirts etc.

The formal nights will be the first day at sea and PROBABLY the next to last night. There was only one semiformal night and the rest casual(one less semiformal than I remember)

Advise - plan your days carefully, there are lines to get off, lines to get on, lines for breakfast and the excursions all take more time than they say. There just doesn't seem to be enough time in port.

Ketchikan - you walk right off into town, very easy. It was raining and chilly, Did a land and sea tour - saw eagles and seals and starfish.
Skagway - LONG walk into town, probably about 1//2-3/4 mile, buses come now and then, weather was hot and sunny. Took the White Pass railway ride, beautiful scenery, long ride back with fumes from the engine.
Juneau - whale watching - saw many, but only once did one jump out of the water. I expected to see them closer but there is a law that they have to stay 50 yds away at least. Saw eagle, dolphins and harbor seals. Larry's looked like a good deal, less expensive and less people, sorry I didn't know about it sooner.

Walter - I talked to a couple of people that did the glacier and dog sled - loved it but it was hot on the glacier!

Got to run, try to write more later

HawaiiApril,
I e-mailed Celebrity about the Cam problem, but I think you deserve the credit for it coming on again, Well done.
I hope you enjoy Hoonah today, I'll watch the arrival pictures on X's site.
What a nice sunrise you are having

Good info on the excursion planning. Definitely want to see as much as possible, but timing is definitely a concern.

HawaiiApril - did you find that if you did excursions on your own (not with the cruise line) that you were able to get on and off more quickly? Was there a lot of waiting around and crowding with the ship's excursions? Which whale watching tour did you do?

Thanks. (and thanks for the camera mention too)

I booked each of our excursions with the cruise line. There has always been someone there to meet us. Today in Icy Strait there are tenders and we meet in a lounge onboard. I would imagine that you need to take the tender time into consideration when you book off the ship.

Do not drag too much stuff off the ship. It is never a cold as you think it will be. Every excursion has provided binoculars. The sightseeing boats are all large, warm and comfortable. The water is calm on the ship and sightseeing boats alike, do not worry about motion sickness...

There is a Tramway that goes up the mountain right off the ship in Juneau. It cost $21/pp. Beautiful view, goes up real far. Up on top there is a theater, nature building, gift shop and hiking trails. We enjoyed the show there by an indian story teller.

The show on the ship last night was great (surprised the heck out of me) We really enjoyed it - and the casino was closed. They were professional entertainers, comedy was original and the music good. They were called Tom Keith and Sidney.

Gotta go, the ship is docking in Hoonah right now!
