Food Stands on the beach

We have been to Rendezvous several times and have watched people enter Vigie Beach, be approached by locals, and then turn around and leave. I don't know what was said and maybe the people just came to have a look and never planned on staying. Here's an excerpt from a Trip Advisor review of Vigie.

The public entrance just past the runway and by the Rendevouz resort felt a little dangerous. A bit of a bottleneck with some locals hanging out and making vaguely threatening remarks. In the end they just wanted to sell drugs but nonetheless I wouldnt advise going there alone.

As the entire beach is public, not sure what the above poster is referring to by "the public entrance" by Rendezvous. It is a very long stretch of beach, the section over nearer to the airport is where most of the food stands are located - when walking you have to pass Rendezvous (on the road) and pass the cemetary, you will see the food stands and some arked cars, etc. There is usually not a problem with vendors or being harrassed, although I could see where some guests of the hotel may not be aware of the beachpolicies in St. Lucia and would easily believe that they weren't supposed to go down that way. Hard to believe sometimes, but we run into guest all the time who think the beaches are private to the hotels and they should "stay" on their beach area. Not true- all beaches in St. Lucia are publc and for the use of anyone - local or tourist.

The food stands are shanties/shacks - but excellent grilled chicken and plate lunches. Lots of shade down around that end and you can usually catch a cab back to the ship if you don't want to walk right there at the airport entrance. Also, Customs has a large presence as does Airport security, so safety is pretty much assured, especially down near that end. Obviously, use the same precautions you would anywhere else in the world - don't carry large amounts of cash (or flash it around), don't carry your valuables with you, etc. Use common sense, all that good stuff.

It is a great beach and I am sure you would enjoy it. Either way, enjoy St. Lucia!

The public entrance comment was from Trip Advisor but we saw people coming and going from this area all day. It must be where the taxis drop off for Vigie Beach.
