Eurodam in Lerwick

Recommended Posts

Hi firstly it's the Eurodam's maiden visit to Lerwick.

The port authority have her down for anchoring in the inner anchorage, roughly a quarter of a mile's tender ride to the cruise ship pontoon in Albert Dock (it's less than 5 minutes long). If however the wind is strong on the day they anchor them out in the outer anchorage off the headland known as the Knab (you can google image search knab Lerwick to get an idea), This tender ride is longer at 10-15mins.

If you would like more info just ask, i'm a local so will be pleased to assist you.

Thank you Richard. We will hope for good weather! Also HAL itinerary says we dock at 10am. and the port authority has us anchoring at 8am. I'm not sure what time to tell our tour guide.

Do you know if shops will be open on Sunday? We're looking forward to seeing the Shetland Islands.

Your most welcome...Obviously some shops are closed on Sundays, however there are others open. Shetland museum is also open on Sundays and well worth a visit due to it's lovely interactive displays.

Like you fingers crossed for good weather for your visit.

Looking forward to seeing the Eurodam for the first time, camera at the ready!

Hi Richard,

We have researched the museum and would like to visit it. Tried to look at internet maps, but the location of the museum seems to be a little away from the roads that are visible on the maps. Do you happen to know the directions from the ship tender dock to the museum?

Thanks for any information,

Penny:)

Hi Penny,

The museum is only at best a 5-10 minute walk away from the cruise ship pontoon, and relatively easy to locate. When you land you will be given a town map that gives clear directions to all the places in town of interest.

However if you should happen not to get a copy you basically follow the main road turning right from the pier along the waterfront until you come to the Viking Bus Station which will be on your left.

Just past this is a small roundabout, on the wall on the right will be a yellow sign saying "access to museum from Browns Road", you go down this small footpath, down to a very small mini roundabout and you are in the museum car park, after that just walk in and enjoy.

Richard-

Glad to hear that the walk is only about 10 minutes at the max. Sometimes the maps don't show how long the walk is. I don't think we can get lost, especially on a Sunday! Appreciate the help. We are looking forward to Lerwick!

Hi

In and around town you should be able to "tap into" the local council authority's internet access, it will come up as SIC GUEST on your wireless search.

I'm no expert on these things but you should be able to get into it, but it won't obviously be a secure network if you know what i mean.

Failing that the council runs a cafe at Islesburgh that has wifi access, http://www.shetland.gov.uk/islesburgh/central_cafe.asp, or you can drop along the internet centre at the public library on the Hillhead up the lanes from the shopping street. http://www.shetland-library.gov.uk/LearningCentre.asp

Hi ,

There are a few knitwear establishments in town links are as follows...http://www.shetlandknitwear.com/Home.aspx or http://www.ninianonline.co.uk/index.html or http://www.shetlandwoolbrokers.co.uk/ or http://shetlopedia.com/The_Spiders_Web

Lerwick definitely has no shortage of cafe's that's for sure! The New Harbour Cafe right across from the pier where you land sells meals, toasties, rolls, snacks etc all day and is popular with the locals, i would say a budget option, Osla's cafe on the main street is a middle of the road option, or if your feeling top end the restaurant in the Museum offers a la carte lunches.

Mareel cafe bar will just have opened weeks before you arrive, located in the new music & cinema venue next door to the Museum it to will offer lunches, salads etc...but as i say there are cafe's dotted everywhere, plus the Queen's Hotel & Grand Hotel do lunches too, so plenty to go on!

Richard - we will be in Lerwick late next summer. Is there anyone offering day tours for us cruise ship people? Do we need a tour or is it better just to walk the town and visit the museum? Looks like this is getting to be a stop for several cruise lines. What's the best not to be missed thing???

Thanks

Hi Cathi,

Yes Shetland seems to be getting more popular with every passing year. The town of Lerwick is easily walked. The coastal walk round the Knab headland is popular, this walk passes the Lodberrie's, http://shetlopedia.com/The_Lodberries

If your wanting to tour and not go on the ships tour, the local bus service to Sumburgh airport to see Old Scatness & Jarlshof in the south of the island is a far cheaper option at around £3 each person single or thereabouts of the top of my head http://www.leaskstravel.co.uk/bus-timetables/sumburgh.shtml or if your wanting a private hire try http://www.shetlandtours.co.uk/ or http://www.seeshetland.shetland.co.uk/

Hope this is of some help to you all

hello wheatly,

you will tender from the ship, been to lerwick on the msc poesia to iceland etc, loved lerwick,if you like a home cooked meal to die for and a great pint on a sunday,,when you get of the tender straight acroos the main road is an alley/ st, called irvine st, at the top you will see the bank of scotlands front (maroon) doors, turn right (this is now commercial st)walk for about 300 mtrs and on the left you will see a little sign board at the entrance to the pub,(it is not well signed so keep your eyes peeled)called the george.go in and upstairs there is a great little bar,and they do a sunday lunch with all the trimmings for about 12 scottish pounds it is just the best.

i know a lot of people refuse to buy on shore when they have paid for it on the cruise, but this is something else, have a pint for me

Thanks so much Richard. I think we will hope for great weather and do the walk through Lerwick. Save a few pennies for that pint that is required in every port!!!

What a shame the Eurodam's visit to Shetland today was cancelled due to weather. Was looking forward to seeing her in the harbour. September is always 50/50 when it comes to visits here, but next time lucky..

Eurodam is down to visit Lerwick again next year (July 26th), the day i get married, so hopefully will find the time to nip for a photo of her then!

Second - MY DW & I are due to arrive July 26/13 on the ms Eurodam.

It is our first cruise in Europe, and of course first time to visit your country.

Hi Glenn & Deb,

Thank you so very much for your kind wishes regarding my wedding. So looking forward to it, hope the weather for your visit & the wedding is a cracker. :)

Lerwick as mentioned earlier in the thread is easy to walk, their is also local bus services to Sumburgh or Scalloway on Shetland's westside (the old ancient capital),it really depends on what you want to do. Also in town is Fort Charlotte & and excellent Shetland Museum.

We will be in Lerwick in September 2013 on the NCL Star. Since we enjoy doing our own shore excursions, is it possible to rent a car reasonably on the day we dock since according to one of Richard's posts there is only a 50-50 chance in September of being able to dock. Also is the public transportation a possible way to get to Jarlshof and get back to the ship on time? I have looked at the public bus schedule but didn't know what the stops are for the dock or for Jarlshof. Also where is the botanic garden? Is that in walking distance? Thanks for any info you can give.

Hi Millie,

When it comes to car hire in Shetland the following can help you

http://www.boltscarhire.co.uk/

http://www.starrentacar.co.uk/

http://www.grantfieldgarage.co.uk/

With regards to the bus timetable they are talking of a new timetable in April (this to be confirmed), however the bus driver if you let he/she know will happily assist you getting off at the right stop/pick up again.

Looking at the present timetable if it does not change it would appear the 10.30am bus down (Pick up right opposite tender pier) if you get ashore on time would be best, with a 13:15 return getting you back to the tender pier in Lerwick an hour later. This would give you at least 1.5 hours to see Jarlshof.

The gardens are up one of the many lanes from Commercial St, these are on the steep side but walkable. On the map of Lerwick attached they are a green square that says "flower park"

Hope this helps!
