Aplmac Posted May 22, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2009 Despite travelling up and down the Leser Antilles all my life somehow I never visited DOMINICA. Cruising has changed that, now. We first visited Dominica while cruising on a UK ship -Ocean Village Two. It was January 2008. .............................. Dominica is a rain-forest island, with lots of waterfalls and small rivers! Yes, it's possible the rain will fall the day you're there, since popular island lore has it that it rains somewhere in Dominica every single day of the year even in the height of Dry Season. The island is greeeen. Early morning arrival at Roseau. .
Aplmac Posted May 22, 2009 Author #2 Share Posted May 22, 2009 ..it looks like this. Look at the early-morning rain in the hills! This guy's wondering if he'll get wet! We're getting closer to the dock, now.. (These few pics are taken from Carnival Victory, Nov.2008) Hey, there's a Princess ship in town that day, as well. She's berthed at the cargo dock, in the North of Roseau. .
Aplmac Posted May 22, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted May 22, 2009 ..we found everything to be verrry green.. -with narrow roads. This stop was near a thermal springs place with bubbling hot water and steam! coming out of the ground!! DON'T try to drive yourself there. Don't even think about it! Let the locals do the driving, while you do the rubber-necking. .
Aplmac Posted May 22, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted May 22, 2009 . Roseau is no megalopolis, that's fer sure... :) This is the dock that Carnival Victory cruisers will use. The view South, from the pier You might want to walk over to that big Hotel you see at left.. I've read there's a nice bar there -and you'll get some scenic pics looking back at your ship . DrmnOfMaui Posted May 22, 2009 #5 Share Posted May 22, 2009 Thank you! Thank you for posting more pictures!!! Your shots have been just as helpful as guidebooks and internet sites for me as I've been researching my trip. Dominica is not on my upcoming trip, but it is definitely a place that I have been hearing more and more about. I'm already working on planning our 2nd cruise to the Caribbean! Next, I'll need you to travel to Alaska for some shots there... we have that thought on the horizon as well!!:D Beautiful, Aplmac. Thank you! Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging wordsbut I'm writing to say that you might want to bring that Alaska cruise horizon forward considerably while there are still Alaska cruises to be had. I had a long honest converation with a ship's Environmental Officer who daily has to deal with his ship's waste output wherever that ship is. ALL cruise ships now operate under strict environmental parameters. No more chucking everything over the side at 3 a.m. while passengers are asleep! He was telling me that already there are areas in Alaska's territorial waters where they are allowed to pump off NOTHING AT ALL and he is obliged to "hold" all waste output until the ship gets waaay out there where he is allowed to get rid off the stuff. To hear him tell it, Alaska's environmental protection laws only get stricter and stricter to the point where -in the near future- the cruise lines will simply say, Aw forget it, and close up shop on Alaska cruises! That bad? I asked. That bad. he said. How long I asked? - five years? No he said. Shorter than that -more like three. ___________________________________ No you know. Do the Alaska cruise soon. DrmnOfMaui Posted May 22, 2009 #7 Share Posted May 22, 2009 Ohhh.... I didn't know any of that. We are planning next summer for Alaska, so hopefully we will make it! It's been a cruise I've always thought of doing. I have a minor in geology, so the glacial activities are of huge interest to me! (Along with those volcanos in St. Lucia!:)) I've always wanted to see a big chunk of ice fall of into the water. My kids just roll their eyes at me:rolleyes:. That's OK, I know they will be amazed when they see it! Thanks for the info, I will pass it on to my husband, and my parents are also in the planning stages. I might get them to speed up a bit. gr82cu2 Posted May 22, 2009 #9 Share Posted May 22, 2009 A beautiful stream on the way up to the rain forest. I had never seen a Royal Palm before; they were beautiful and HUGE! A beautiful waterfall This school bus was a victim of a hurricane in 1989 I believe is what we were told. No one was on the bus at the time :) The public library with a view! Aplmac Posted May 23, 2009 Author #16 Share Posted May 23, 2009 . The congested traffic bottleneck madness at Trafalgar Falls' carpark! -Never again. Far too many vanloads of tourists -all trying to access one tiny place via one skinny lil mountain road?? One of dozens of mountain streams. Dominica does not suffer for water! . gr82cu2 Posted May 26, 2009 #18 Share Posted May 26, 2009 gr82cu2,What tour did you go on to see these beautiful sites? The rainbow picture is absolutely beautiful! Dominica is next on my "to see" list now! We did the accessible Dominica and Rain Forest drive with RCI. The library and church, we walked to on our own. The rainbow was taken from our balcony on the ship before we left. The tour was great and that is where we saw the water fall, banana trees, rain forest, national park with all the beautiful trees (and hurricane destroyed bus), stream, etc. Dominica was a beautiful island with very friendly people. We hope to return there one day. Unfortunately, because of their taxes there, according to our tour guide, the population has dropped 20,000 people in the past 10 years (they are all moving to other Caribbean islands). At that rate it won't be populated for much longer.

Roseau, capital of Dominica ...................................................... Here on crowded Barbados (166 sq. miles of rock) we have nearly three hundred thousand people - that's right.. 300,000 ppl and it shows! ...................................................... Dominica's the complete opposite, with a land area of 296 sq. mi. and a population somewhere under 100K. I believe? When those who can afford the tax rates start to move in to take advantage of the relatively un-spoiled environment and solitude Dominica will start to pick up and develop a bit(-improved road infrastructure?) but for now it waits its turn! Roseau waterfront, right at the pier where we got off the ship! .
Rare Host Kat Posted May 27, 2009 #20 Share Posted May 27, 2009 with a friendly reminder to all. When you post a picture as an attachment to a Cruise Critic post, Cruise Critic "hosts" the picture for you. It appears as a thumbnail and your fellow Cruise Critic members click it to see a larger version. For posting a picture in a Cruise Critic post you need to find a photo hosting service on the Internet. In particular, one that will allow "hot linking" so that your photo can be displayed inside a web page that belongs to someone other than the hosting service. You upload your photo there, and get the URL (web address) of the photo. Then use the Insert Image icon (looks like a picture of a mountain with a little sun) to insert the image into your post. But please be considerate if you choose to do this, as big image files take time to download, particularly for your fellow Cruise Critic members who are on dial-up connections. Very large images will distort the appearance of Cruise Critic pages, especially for those Cruise Critic members with smaller screens. Please try to re-size your very large pictures before posting in a post. , our system allows only up to six images in a Cruise Critic post. This includes smilies too. Also, all test posts must be on the TEST FORUM at http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=225. I sincerely hope this information will be helpful, and with your pictures! tiyana4 Posted May 31, 2009 #25 Share Posted May 31, 2009 Pics of Dominica: Very tropical and so much to see. This was one port that really turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. In addition, excursions were very inexpensive here..we paid $20 or 25 pp for a 3-4 hour tour. The tour guides were very knowledgable and were available at the docks without pre-booking.
