  1. We have cruised with Celebrity (wonderful) and Royal Carib (not so wonderful) and we are now looking, first time with NCL, to book a balcony cabin on the Star. The website only shows a cabin size range and we would appreciate any tips on which cabins and/or balconies are better (larger) and which ones we should avoid. Thanks for the help.

We'll be on the Star in May. We're booked in an aft on Deck 9. It's got the wraparound balcony so a bit of extra room. It's a PH Suite SF, so may or may not fit your needs...

  2. Danish Viking,

Thanks for taking the time to help everyone out. It is much appreciated by me and everyone else, I'm sure!

We'll be flying into CPH on May 19th after spending a few days in Reykjavik. We'll just be spending one night pre-cruise (3 nights post-cruise). We have 2 rooms booked at Hotel Kong Arthur for the night prior to boarding the Norwegian Star on the 20th. Is there a train that runs from CPH that would drop us off fairly close to our hotel or is a taxi our best option? Thoughts on Hotel Kong Arthur? Options on getting from the hotel to the cruise ship? Will I have a problem paying for a taxi using a US credit card or should I have local currency?

    I'm sorry, so many questions...

  3. Jim,

I will write a short review and give details about "our" cabin. I will have my new binoculars in hand for the ocean views! My TA was surprised this cabin was available and we are happy especially because the DH prefers port to starboard and I wanted to at last have an aft location cabin.

Thanks, I'll be waiting for it! Our last cabin was an aft PH Suite on the Sun (9076) and it was incredible. Can't imagine anyone not liking those aft views!

  4. I'll never understand the type of person who will spend thousands to cruise (cruise fare, getting to and from the port, pre or post cruise hotel stay, excursions, etc.) and put up such a stink about $12 per day. Think about it, it's only $12 per person per day!! I don't care if you're from England, Australia or Venus, pay the DSC! There are many people behind the scenes who benefit from the DSC, not just your room steward.

Different cultures, different expectations. We tip. If you don't like it, too bad. Don't be so cheap!

  5. I see this answer often. And can not figure out why people give such an answer. Does this mean you tip $1 a meal, or $1 a week, or $20 a meal? I have a general idea of what "commensurate with service" means but it does not help anyone that is asking the question.

Kind of like asking : How much is a cruise? and answersing " An appropriate amount"

I agree. When I see that answer, my first thought is always "Use the word commensurate in a sentence that doesn't contain the word tip or gratuity."

  6. Aft penthouse suites on the Star and Jewel. Love those penthouses aft penthouses!

I'll be in an aft Penthouse suite on the Star next May. We're in 9232. I know it has the wraparound balcony. Hope it's comparable to the aft Penthouse suites on the Sun!

  7. Hi all.

We're new cruisers (only have one cruise under our belt, Alaska this past June on the Sun) and we're starting to research and plan our next cruise.

We're booked on the Star next May to Norway and want to start planning some excursions. NCL has nothing listed yet so I'm assuming it's still too early. I've been on TripAdvisor to get a feel for what we might do in each port. We'll probably book our own excursions since we're not too fond of the herd mentality, preferring to go on our own. But we would like to have a little flexibility, compare price, etc.

Any idea when excursions start to show? We're still about 9 months way... Thanks!

  8. Thanks everyone for the replies! I'm sure I'll have a great time on the Star. It looks like a great ship and the itinerary is awesome. We had such a great time on the Sun and loved the room we had. I'm just worried that we got spoiled by such a beautiful room and it's all downhill from here... :D

We probably should've started with an inside cabin on our first cruise and worked our way up from there! Lol...

I know, I know! First world problems! :)

  9. We just came back a few weeks ago from our first ever cruise, a NB to Alaska on the Sun. We were in 9076 which is an aft Penthouse Suite. The room was awesome, better than we expected with a huge balcony.

I guess we've gotten the cruise bug since we booked our next one while still on the ship. :) We booked a cruise to Norway on the Star next year and the aft views were so great that we picked another aft Penthouse Suite, specifically 9232.

Has anyone stayed in Suites on both ships and, if so, what do you think of the Star? I hate to say it, but after looking at some Youtube videos and online pics, the Sun rooms seem a lot bigger with a much deeper balcony. The Star does have the nicer coffee machine and our room, 9232, has the wraparound balcony. Any thoughts are appreciated!

  10. I find it strange that both Avis and Budget is "sold out" May 22 next year so maybe send them an email or wait a few months to book. I never had problems booking a car so far in advance.

Thanks, Lars! I went on the Budget and Avis websites and they both have cars available for that day. I made the mistake of trying to book through an independent website, Sixt.com, and they were showing no cars available. I appreciate the quick response!

  11. Hi Lars,

Hope you can help with a quick question... We'll be in Alesund next May and we'd like to rent a car to drive the Path of the Trolls. It looks like there are two options for rentals. One is a Shell/7-11 and the other is at the Alesund Airport. The Shell/7-11 is showing no availability on our day, May 22. The airport seems to have plenty of cars.

Is the airport fairly close to the cruise dock so that a taxi ride would be feasible? Or would that cut into our day too much time wise? We'll be in port from 7AM-5PM.

Or is it too far out to book cars at the Shell/7-11?

    Thanks!

  12. Just got back two weeks ago from the Norwegian Sun. It was an awesome time, even better than I thought it would be. Agree with everyone about scouring the Alaska board for info.

Bring plenty of memory cards for the camera, you're gonna need them! :)

  13. Got back about 10 days ago from Alaska and I already miss Alaskan Brewing Icy Bay IPA... Tried a bunch of different beers, and that one really stood out, for me anyway.
