  2. Something not mentioned is that with the Westerdam when you go to Glacier Bay HAL opens up the Bow of the ship for scenic cruising. I love doing this, it makes you feel up close to t he Glaciers. Princess does not do this that I am aware of. I have sailed both Crown and Westerdam, of course Westerdam many times. I agree with comments that have been made. Especially about the Spa/Thermal Suite. There just just no comparison, the Crown's Thermal Suite is basically a dungeon lol. You take this narrow small stairwell down to the Thermal Suite. No windows to the outside, no scenic views. Cabins over all are much smaller than HAL's. But Princess has good Pizza :D

  5. Showing my age !!! The graphics remind me of my years late 60's -70! I was 18 then! I was going off to college at USC and beyond to be a dentist! Wow what memories!

Lisa as always thank you for our fleet report !

    Sorry I got off track!

    Denise:)

Denise, yes reminds me of the same, we are probably about the same age except I might be a yr or two younger. I remember the summer of 1968 going to Haight Ashbury. I was 15 and bought a very colorful Nehru Jacket [emoji111]🏻

  8. Wishing you luck in getting it changed. While there is a very slim chance of getting there in time, it is slim. As mentioned is two obstacles, first is disembarkation/customs. It's been about 5 weeks since we disembarked Jewel but the early disembark taking off your own luggage was a much longer line than regular customs. We were in a Suite so were off the ship fairly early. We took Super Shuttle but a lot of traffic near the airport and actually did not get checked in till about 10:30. Fortunately our flight was not till 12:35. Unless you can get the Concierge to get you a speedy disembark and hire a private van to be there very early there just seems to be too many risks involved with the change of your flight.

  9. Looking at the pictures (provided they are accurate), was Statendam in that condition when she left the HAL fleet. What did they do to refurbish her?

While it has been a few years since I was on the Statendam, I have no idea if in fact the ship was in that shape you can certainly tell from the pictures there was not nearly as much changed as I thought there would be. It appears the cabins, furniture and soft goods remained the same from being the HAL Statendam. I was under the impression she was like a brand new ship  The rust shown in the pictures would not have occurred that quickly and I would suspect it was from the Statendam.

I am not sure where I read it but I thought I had heard that some of the crew actually transferred to P & O and stayed with the ship.

  10. Are there any celebrities cruising on Celebrity? Has anyone met a celebrity on a cruise? I mean not one being paid to be there.

I have worked in country clubs and have worked for the ultra rich. The luxury they enjoy is something I never even imagined. I don't read celebrity/fan magazines, I wouldn't know a Kardashian if it slapped me, 240 ct sheets vs. 1600 ct sheets doesn't affect my sleep. and I don't LV from Fruit of the Loom. I don't covet their wealth.

I don't mind the wealthy having perks and luxury beyond my dreams. What I do mind is having it thrown into my face. Before I go for dinner at the Lido, I don't need to be told that the food at the Foo-Foo Café is much better. Should I be told that my bedding is only good enough and certainly not luxurious. Need I go to shows where the best seats are unattainable for people of my class? And most of all, I don't want my partner being constantly reminded our vacation is less than it could be. Sometimes it seems money is spent to remind economy class sucks, money that could have gone to making economy better.

I have to say I am totally confused by your post???

Celebrity's name does not mean Celebrities sail on that line nor would I ever expect to see one on a Mass Market Line. Although I have heard that people like Oprah have bought out The Haven on the NCL Pearl several years ago. Just my opinion you are taking the offerings to upsell to something nicer way to hard I might even say you are taking it a bit too personal which I am sorry. While you do not want to spend your hard earned money on these luxuries many of us do. I for one prefer a Suite, my own Espresso Maker in my cabin. Much prefer a specialty restaurant. I do most of this stuff because one I like it, I work hard and feel I deserve it. It is really no different than buying a Michael Kors hand bag or buying and iPad rather than a knock off no name tablet.

Life is really all about options, I work two full time jobs at 61 yrs old when I should be looking to slow down and retire. But I work because I enjoy the very nice things in life. Some people could care less about the extras while others love the offerings of some better things. The cruise lines have just found a way to make more income offering these luxury items. I certainly do not begrudge them for attempting to make more money :D

Now back to what was being discussed with HAL, unfortunately I feel HAL is still way behind when it comes to the competition for Suite offerings. They of all cruiselines have the MOST Crowded noisy Main Dining Rooms. There is nothing relaxing or elegant about it. I am only hoping with the additional Restaurants on the Koningsdam that it will not have tables so close together in the Main Dining Room. I actually applaud Celebrity for what they have added in the way of Suite amenities.

  13. While I do not know for certain but I predict that within two years deposits for US and Canada cruises will be like Europe and Australia and they will ALL be non-refundable deposits but with deposits being at $100 per person, maybe more for a longer cruise or for Suites. I also predict penalty periods/final payments to start at 90 days and 120 days for Suites. This is already happening with some cruiselines/river cruises as well as Land Resorts.

US and Canadian travelers will no longer be able to be fickle and cancel when they wish. This will take away many last minute bargains and make for planning well in advance to have some lower pricing. The days of thinking you can wait till the last minutes will be a thing of the past.

  14. So Lisa, do you know if this nonrefundable deposit prevents the booked pax from getting a price drop applied if one occurs before final payment?

I have to say I honestly do not know that answer. But taking a wild guess I would say that they would allow the lower price if it did happen prior to final payment. HAL has and still does have a generous policy with price reductions after final and giving ship board credit. Other cruise lines are not nearly as generous.

  17. Interesting that it is brought up about not needing to pay for Shore Excursions with Princess :D

Princess sent out this information just this morning.

Important shore excursion development that Princess Cruises recently began testing and will continue to evaluate in 2016.

Our research shows that many of our guests appreciate the opportunity to pre-pay for shore excursions and to reduce the size of their bill at the conclusion of a cruise. Guests also value the assurance of guaranteed space on popular excursions that may otherwise fill up before they have a chance to book onboard.

All other premium cruise lines currently require pre-payment of shore excursion reservations, and Princess will assess the response to this policy among our own guests on Alaska itineraries aboard Grand Princess from May 11 to September 8, 2016. Discounts on select voyages will reward guests who reserve and pre-pay for their excursions in advance.

During this test, Alaska shore excursion pre-reservations will require payment within 24 hours by credit card to avoid cancellation. Onboard credit will not be accepted for pre-reservations, and will be limited to payment for excursions reserved once onboard.

We believe the assurance of local expertise, safe operating practices and verified value offered by Princess shore excursions, along with the convenience and confidence of pre-payment, will be well received by your clients. We currently plan to evaluate the response and make a final decision by the end of 2016 on implementing the policy fleetwide.

So Basically the Booking and not paying for the Shore Excursions on Princess may soon be a thing of the past.

Right now NOT every HAL Voyage is offering the Non Refundable Deposit, from what I can see it is mostly Late Spring Caribbean and Alaska and some Europe. In some cases the price difference is significant plus ship board credit where there is not any In these case I am not so sure it is a bad thing. If I plan on going then why not save money and capture more ship board credit. Pretty much like buying Air. Either take the non-refundable or pay a crazy amount more to get credit to use it later if you had to cancel.

  19. how does this affect bookings where you want to use your FCD

You will lose your FCC if you cancel. I have seen this occur several times with Princess.

Like I mentioned I truly predict this to be the future of booking cruises. Through the years we have seen deposits with the mass market cruise lines DECREASE. For many years HAL had the largest deposit requirement. But what has happened is that people on the Mass market lines did not want or have the money to put down with the larger deposit. So while in some cases on a 7 day cruise HAL's deposit is still $350 per person but we have seen in the past two years that most of the time the deposit is reduced. Other lines such as NCL and RCI run $100 pp specials frequently. This has actually increased bookings but as mentioned many just cancel prior to final.

In recent trends cruise lines such as NCL are I changing their final due date to 90 days prior as opposed to the 75 days that was the norm for years. While luxury lines are also making the final due at 90 or some even 120 days prior they are also increasing the deposit required.

  20. Hotels have been doing this same thing for AGES though.

I would also be curious how the CPP or CPPP plans come into play on these. Is the non-ref deposit refundable if you get the insurance? Or is there something about these new deposits that would "override" the coverage you are purchasing with regard to the deposit amount.

Good Question, that I would like the answer on myself.

  21. Hadn't heard this yet Lisa, thank you! I know your agency has a much better relationship with your sales rep than ours does here.

Is there a name for the program (example only-how they call some rates "Signature Fares" - I know that wouldn't be it), specific promo codes, etc to be on the watch for?

Appreciate you sharing that info this morning!

They Call it the LTD Non Refundable Deposit Fare. Rate Code is RA1, but there is also View and Verandah which is KD2 and Advantage Fares which is RH5 and Signature Fares which is FIT.

So far in my searching I have found a few on line agencies offering the lower pricing but it is NOT stating that the deposit is non refundable but then my understanding is this JUST started so they may not even be aware that the web site is picking up the lowest price but it is also non refundable.

  22. HAL has now followed the Lead of Carnival and Princess with a new offer with Non-Refundable Deposits. This is something NEW and one must be aware that you may see pricing that is in some cases only about $30.00 per person lower yet in other cases with a travel agency having any special pricing the difference can be $300.00+ less per person. Also it is Non Transferable and No Name Changes. So you cannot just move the deposit to another sailing date.

My understanding this could be the waive of the future where once you book that deposit will be non refundable. It already happens with many River Cruises and other types of travel. As well of those in other countries.

My speculation is that by 2018 or maybe earlier all will require a non-refundable deposit.
