Really appreciate you reporting back.  I'm not clear though...did they avoid the fine as long as they follow the quarantine?  Or it is still TBD and they could be sent a nasty bill to pay?

Feel 200% the same.  I think from our roll call we're booked on the same cruise (Anthem).  Like you, we have done everything we were told, as vaccinated as we can be (booster for us, double vaxed for our kids)...We have pretty much quarantined ourselves for the past two years.  Really angry about this.

When we saw this new border threat, our response was "well there goes March cruise".  Now we are rethinking and not sure what to do.  We feel that cruises are safer than any other holiday, but do know that people are still getting covid no matter how careful.  Not worried about getting covid but at least if we can drive ourselves home and quarantine there, that's more manageable (plus financial).

We were on the fence too and still are but I think we've 99% decided to go as long as the border is open.  We also plan to bring rapid tests to take on day 5 so there are hopefully no surprises.

My parents are willing to go home even with a positive test but I think my husband and I will come prepared to work remotely from a hotel if needed.  We do have a dog but will deal with that if needed.  If it appears that people crossing who are positive aren't getting fined when they follow the quarantine rules we will also come back right away. I suspect this is how it will be and if you follow quarantine rules you will not get fined.  The government is taking the chance of having "compliant" people revolting if they do.  It's all very frustrating.

It will be nice to see a fellow Canadian on the ship hopefully!

But it sure has taken the enjoyment out of planning and the feeling of knowing we always followed the rules and did what was right.

Update:My friend reported when they crossed the border they were made aware of the possibility of being fined 5000.00 per person. They had to agree to being aware of the potential fine, and was provided tests for day 1 and day 8.  They were release and was informed their applications on ArrivCan will be reviewed.  Fines are assessed on a case by case basis but were told that they are taking the approach of awareness, education and the importance of isolation.

This may not be extremely useful as your mileage may vary.  I am passing on their experience.I will follow up to see if they receive any further correspondence.

Another Hamiltonian!  This is somewhat good news.  I'm not surprised that you don't get fined right at the border.  I suspect that a lot of this is a deteriorate to travel.  Look at how many on this board have already cancelled vacations...

We have a March break cruise that we are going on as long as the border remains open.  Hopefully this will change by then.  But my parents are coming back across positive or not.  My husband and I will bring our work laptops and if Royal will cover our quarantine costs we will stay in the US. I'm still on the fence whether any cruise company will do this once you are off their ship...

On another note I'm frustrated.  My family and are have done everything we were told to do.  We are all vaccinated, even my children, boostered, wear N95's and have done every lock down with no complaining.  I work from home and do everything we can to be safe.  Covid is something we will have to live with forever and in no ways am I not saying it's dangerous.  My father has COPD and my mother cancer.  We have done everything we can to stay safe.  But at what time do we have to continue with our regular lives (safely).  It's been 3 years now.  I feel like this cruise has been the only bright spot to think about the past 2 years and now I feel like the government is penalizing me for doing every single thing they asked of us gladly... I'm frustrated.  I feel horrible for the nursing shortages and everything single surgery that is being delayed. But the provincial government could have fixed this 2 years ago already. And I'm not interested in a political debate so save it for anyone roaring to go - lol.  I don't know what the right answer is but I need something to look forward to after all this time.  My own mental health is suffering.

We had 6 Family Members come back from being on the Mardi Gras where 3 tested positive on the cruise and 1 after. After several tests including the one at Pearson the other 2 were negative. The ones that were positive drove home. They were allowed to cross the border without a fine. They were given tests to do at home on Day 1 and Day 8. They were advised to quarantine for 10 days. They were called by Health Canada and 1 also got a visit at the house. As long as you follow the quarantine rules you should be good.

May I ask when this was? I understand this new fine rules JUST took affect.  But this is hopeful!

I feel like if you are truthful, friendly and have a good quarantine plan in place with proof most officials would not fine a Canadian.

Thanks @Fouremco. I just added myself to the list to be notified when these masks are back in stock. Good to know you find them comfortable as I also wear hearing aids and glasses. Too much stuff tucked behind the ears!!

Check more than once and don't relay on waiting for the email.  I'm also on the list to receive emails when they are back in stock and it's usually days after I've already noticed they are back in stock myself and purchased them.

We've been buying the kids and adults CAN-N95s.

Geez.........are we ever going to have sore noses when we get home☹️

I've been getting tested once a week and my mother 3 times a week since the beginning of covid.  She's had over 300 covid tests; so we can visit my grandmother/her mother.  My kids also go every other week and get tested (9 and 14).  I promise it's really not that bad.  And if I have to have 4 tests to go on a cruise it's not even a thought to me.  Only aggravation is the price LOL

  6. We are also sailing in March.  My son got his first shot yesterday.  Was a breeze and other than a sore arm he  is completely fine today.  So as long as the second doses come when they are supposed too we are all good for our cruise 🙂

    Thanks for Info

Maybe I’m misreading but the link you provide seems to be all about mixed doses? And a comment below confirms that RC have stated that the 42 day maximum applies only to mixed doses

This is correct.  When there WAS a maximum time frame for doses, it was only for mixed doses. This has now changed.  I follow this closely as I am a mixed dose Canadian.

And Royal would also have to change the rules on the interval between vaccines. It's currently at 42 days. Sorry to be a downer, just want to to have the facts you need to make an informed decision

This is now incorrect.  there is no maximum interval anymore.  It was changed before they started accepting mixed doses.

Lots of things worth stressing over. Being vaccinated by March is not one of them 🙂

Can't tell if you're Canadian or not by your profile but if you are then you know that is definitely something to stress over 😆

I say that as a mixed dose Canadian who waited 4 months between doses...

It's not even approved yet in Canada (soon, but not yet) so can't see Royal mandating it this year. But I'll say that the more vaccinated, the more comfortable I'll be. (Our kids and 12 and 16 so both vaccinated)

I'm stressing over this.  I have a cruise booked March 13, 2022.  My 14 year is already fully vaccinated but we are traveling with my 9 year old.  I will vaccinate him as soon as I possibly can and have lost my patience with the government at this point.  We've ordered enough pfizer to give first doses to every child in that age group but no word on when second doses are coming.  If they do delayed dosing (because they want to for whatever reason OR because they didn't order them in time) I may have to move this cruise for the 4th time...  I was okay with the last 3 moves because I understood it, but this this move (because our government is too slow) will be extremely upsetting.

it took me a couple of minutes to figure out you were writing about 5-11 age group 😁
I would not worry , our health District in Ontario is already setting up mass vaccination centres , to vaccinate the 5-11 age group and to give out 3 doses

    it will go pretty fast

my son is in the military, he is thinking of skipping remembrance Day , still his since his 4 month old son can not vaccinated,

he is worried about being in crowds where there maybe a large number of unvaccinated people

Please thank your son for his service!

  12. I do not like the sound of that. At all. We are going to get royally screwed over again. Mark my word. It’s not difficult to make a contract with dates and time frames, I work in corporate law so I know this… I do not understand our government.

I also suspect more parents than people expect will vaccinate their children. Everyone I know has a vacation booked for early 2022.

When is your PIF? If it was me, I'd wait until I have to make a decision. I jumped the gun on my not quite 12-year-old and we would have been able to go on the December cruises I had booked. I moved them to March break. Pfizer is 3 weeks between so if you say 5 weeks from first dose to fully vaccinated, what's the latest he can get that first dose? End of January? You are likely going to be fine. But of course do what you feel is right.

He would need to have his last shot by February 27.  Which is plenty of time IF we get enough doses and they don't do delayed second dosing.  2.9 million doses is not enough for everyone to get 2 doses, even if only half the parents jump to get it done ASAP.  And Pfizer shorted us in the past.  Lots of variables.  When we booked this cruise over a year ago vaccines for children seemed ages away...

The only encouraging comment that I can make at this time is that there have been many media reports indicating that parents aren't nearly as enthusiastic about having their 5-11 year olds vaccinated as they were for themselves or for their 12-17 year old children. So if you move quickly once the vaccine becomes available, your 9 year old may well be able to get the second shot in time for the cruise.

BTW, I've read that there is a similar reluctance in the US, so it's quite possible that it will not become mandatory for this age group for some time.

Thanks for that! I considered that too, especially in the US where there is already a lot more reluctance to get vaccinated even in the adult population.  The only reason why think it may become mandatory to cruise is because the cruise limes may be able to drop the masking requirements on ship, if 99% of people are fully vaccinated at that point.  At least that's what a lot of people on here seem to think...

I guess I'll find hopeful.  I'm trying to stay optimistic.  The constant moving, having everything cancelled, waiting forever for refunds and then booking tours and drink packages all over again is really taking the fun out it.

  15. Now with the US already vaccinating the 5-11 rate there is a lot of chatter on here of it becoming mandatory in the new year.  We have a cruise book March 13, 2022 with my 9 year old.  Obviously we will get him vaccinated but I'm concerned with the time frame.  It looks like by the end of this month we will have approval and hopefully first shots in December.  If we do delayed dosing like we did for adults when first started my son won't be fully vaccinated in the next 4 months.  I've read that we've ordered 2.9 million doses but that is not enough for first and second doses.  Have any fellow Canadians heard anything about dosing with the 5-11 year olds?

This will be the 5th cruise we would have to reschedule (border and mixed dose problems).  It's becoming depressing.

  16. I read that the Canadian government is not dropping the testing requirement to come into/back into the country.  But it sounds like if you are vaccinated you may not need a test to get into the US.  Until everything is officially announced we won't really know.

That said, I'm HOPING that the testing requirements for Canadians coming home will be dropped.  I understand why they don't want to to drop it just yet for people coming in.  The PCR test to come back is expensive, especially for a family of 4 and in US funds.

We have a cruise booked on Royal in March.  Currently they pay for the test before you get off the boat but when the CDC Do Not Sail Order expires in November I am sure they ar egoing to pass that cost off to the customer.

  17. So what's peoples thoughts on the border opening and allowing mixed mRNA vaccines?  According to Royal's website the CDC accepts that mixture.  It will be interesting to see if that's the case with the border.  If they are allowing it on cruise ships I would assume they'll allow it at the border.

But if not our government better step up and allow us a third dose for travel like other provinces.  I did the right them, on their recommendation, and I don't deserve to be penalized for it.  I'm not a fan of sneaking to get a third dose.  I shouldn't have to do that.  I expect the government to fix it - one way or another.
