  1. Actually not forgotten in the woods, but without function in the Schengen-area. There is quite some traffic crossing the border there, just no car traffic, as the public road is on the opposite bank of the river..

To be precise, in that pic I am standing on the Czech side and look into the German-speaking country. I add a photo looking in the opposite direction - from the German-speaking country into Czechia (just needed to cut that board, as it gives too many details :-).

But the lion has the Slovak coat of arms. The lion os Czech. Is this an old picture when it was Czechoslovakia? You did say that you might scan in some old pictures...

Not in the b/w-era yet 🙂 . I took that pic in 2014.  Tho object is obviously older, in fact you detected some state slackness there.

  3. When Ifirst saw this pic, I thought (not Koblenz, yes...), with artillery and a guard, could be the tomb of an unknown soldier, but I missed the flame. And I also put it into Asia or some post soviet -stans, but which river then ? Thanks to some hints I am now back to the tomb of an unknown soldier and in Cairo. So Nile river, Cairo.

Is it the lake with the white bridge "Weiße Brücke" and the Wolfskanal in the Dessau Wörlitz landscaped garden, which makes it a Elbe river excursion?

    notamermaid

It is. To be precise, it is in the Wörlitz landscaped gardens, which are part of the Unesco world heritage site "Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm".

The Wörlitz landscaped gardens were built in the 1770ies, compiling some greatest hits of landscaped gardens in England by the local prince and mixed with travel memories, even a volcano (my last joker for the quiz). Open to the public from the beginning it is a masterpiece of the time of enlightenment and, together with other landscaped gardens, part of the Unesco-Site.

Wörlitz was an excursion of the Viking Elbe cruise until 2018, now they skipped it. But in some years those gondola-tours were the only opportunity to get some water under the keel °°.

    Over to you.

Looking forward to getting more this December!

Buy now, as in some stores Stollen is cheaper than bread now and put it in the deep freezer. Got this tip from a private baker in Saxony (they wanted to convince us to buy a full loaf instead of a half one°°). No prob to keep it until Easter, they said. We did so, forgot it in the freezer and had it in October. Perfectly freah like on the first day.

Giverny, interesting idea. I think I have seen those boats before, on photos "aus dem Osten", somewhere in the East of Germany. Canals and lakes. I do not think it is the Spreewald, those places look wilder, this is tamed and sculptured I think. East of me, I would say definitely somewhat connected to Elbe river cruises.

Elbe is always a good idea, if I present a region and correct in this case.

  7. The direction signs (white on blue background) are used in several countries. As there are traffic lights, obviously no motorway, but innercity traffic. Those oval plates around the traffic lights are also used in several countries. In combination I would suggest Belgium or the Netherlands.

The statue shows some sort of engine, generator or similar with a wing on the right. Winged wheels are symbols for railways, but it is not a wheel. So my working theory is, it shows some industry pioneer in (steam-) shipping, railway, elecricity or similar. Warm or cold ?

Good idea. I was wondering if this could work for going to Luxembourg. Probably not - only if I was working for the Upper Moselle tourist board!

    (....)

I saw a a report today about a zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate nearing bankruptcy. Now the state and local authorities will get together to find a solution. The "Kurzarbeit" scheme with reduced hours does not work in a zoo of course, as the animals want to be fed everyday, no matter if there are paying visitors or not. They cannot reduce the number of employees or their workload.

    notamermaid

In theory yes, why not ? Just be aware that Luxemburg ist cosidered as a risk zone by the German authorities, so youd face a 10-day-quarataine on return to Germany (or does Rhineland-Palatinate special rules there?). Special rules are a speciality of federal Germany. Here in Saxony-Anhalt zoological gardens are allowed to open - just not their animal houses. Not sure, if that helps them though.

Mind you, I have my problems with that 15km for leisure as there are some shopping areas I like for food shopping which are a little further. And for the soul I like to drive into the snowy hills - 50km round trip.

Much complaining about the extension to 31 January alround coming from those most affected. I am glad officials realized the role older children play in spreading and schools are closed.

Oh, well, I should not say it but I will - it could be even worse.

Though other countries had a much stricter curfew, this reduction of mobility is unprecedented in Germany. This year, despite still young, produced a lot of unprecedented events by now .....

But things arent eaten as hot as they were cooked. We have the new directive out in our state of Saxony-Anhalt. The 15 km limit will apply only in hotspots, defined by 200 infections per 100.000 inhabitants within 7 days, mearured five days in a row. The county of Wittenberg does have that level, but their health authorities did work over the festive season. The City of Dessau was above that threshold before Xmastoo. But they shut down the health authorities during the holidays and now miraculously the figures have dropped significantly B-).

The 15 km limit cannot apply before Jan, 16th, 15 km count from the city limits (not the address) and not for work purposes. I am sure your employer can confirm you are supposed to get some winterly photographs from the region for the relaunch of the website. Short letter and enjoy the trip.:.-)

This is what you call a real 'Catch 22' problem.  Lockdown to 15km range but nearest vaccine is 20km away.  Prognosis for reaching herd immunity?–none...

No, not a catch-22 effect, rather a Chinese whisper- effect (we call it "Stille Post" in Germany, when redistributing messages leads to losing information. We do not have the exact wording of the directives yet (just a political agreement). However it was made clear, that the 15-km-movement restrictions will apply to unnessesary trips like excursions, private visits. Going to work, medical treatment, care for relatives will not be affected. Also going to a district court to appeal, if rules would be too strict ....

  11. To wrap up a season, that never was. The Elbe in 2020 did not see many, if any, cruise ships. When the season was about to start, Covid tackled and grounded the ships. The first lockdown in spring, closure of the border to Czechia stopped the season until summer. Viking, market leader on the Elbe called off all of their sailings this year, as well as some of the smaller companies. CroisiEurope did announce, they wanted some cruises to sail, though I doubt they did in the end (not certain though). After all, the passengers had to be able to get to Germany and Czechia and back home.

For the files. It was not the river this year. Unlike 2018 and 2019 the water levels were sound and would have allowed sailings throughout the year.

    Canal St. Martin, Paris?

Well spotted, ljandgb. I thought, it was time for another Paris photo. Just no lock (the blue lights are a swing bridge, pont tournant rue Dieu to be precise), and no Eiffel tower to be seen.

The Canal St. Martin connects the Seine with the Bassin la Villette near the Gare du Nord and was used for transporting construction material, food and fuel into the city. Towards the Seine parts of the canal are in a tunnel, other parts are alley-like with cafes and restaurants, like on the pic. Further north it shows a Paris, which is rather unspoilt by globalisation. All in all it gives a pleasant walk. There are excursion boats in the summer season, too.

    Over to you.

This next picture is from a town that is an excursion from a popular river cruise.

Please name the town and the river you can see. First person with the correct answer gets to post the next photo:

Cascais, suburb of Lisbon. Though looking at Google maps, there is no river, it is the open Atlantic. The mouth of the Tejo river is at Lisbon proper, a bit further to the east.

Does the sign read KORNHAUS? Dessau?

It does. Well done, dogs4fun. Over to you.

The Kornhaus was built as a sort of getaway on the Elbe shore in 1929/30 by Bauhaus-architect Carl Fieger and is still a must for visitors for its location and architecture. After the 2002-floods many dykes in the middle-Elbe region had been strengthened, so people could sit back and relax, though the 2013 flood was even higher. Downstream the Elbe the situation was worse. Unlike earlier floods, the wave was not broken by failing dykes upriver, so 2013 Magdeburg was severely hit as well as other cities. The city of Hitzacker in Lower Saxony did not have any dyke, as no flood in history had reached that far. In 2013 they drowned completely. The day I took that photo four out of six railway lines crossing the Elbe between Dessau and Hamburg were cut due to the flood.

Viking's Elbe cruises used to call in Dessau until 2018 (if I remember correctly) for an excursion to Wörlitz gardens and palace. Now the Elbe cruises start further upstream in Wittenberg.

Wide, flat and calm although it is flooding, that does not seem like the rain. The vegetation for no particular reason also makes me think it may be the Elbe. The flooding at that time was not too bad on the Rhine, although there may have been sandbags, but I do not remember what is was like on the Elbe. The beer garden scene looks German, too.

    notamermaid

Vegetation is obvioulsly neither tropical nor arid environment, but moderate climate. So Germany is a good guess. As well the meadows accompanying the river are typical for the Elbe, which is UNESCO Biosphre Reserve in the middle stretch.

The "beer garden" is part of an iconic restaurant built in the 1920ies.

Feel free to grab a wild card. I will look later and claim it myself if nobody did until then.

Omg, just returned, and saw, what the Android autocorrection did with my writling... sorry for that.

Ok, another photo.  Name what is in the photo. First guess the river. After that name the place in the picture. The person who first guesses correctly gets to post the next photo.
