I have trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance thru my credit card. I have contacted my travel agent and the insurance. I was told by everyone I talked to that since it has been declared an epidemic by the CDC that insurances will not cover, even cancel for no reason.  They said to read the fine print. I would advise checking with your insurance, etc and see what you hear. Please let us know.

what credit card do you have?

I still think 26 is my family’s buy back target. The beating is lower today relative to the market as a whole. I noticed fares went down significantly the last month or it does make me wonder if management saw crunch coming.

That is around my buy too.

I may buy after the financial report or after the covid 19 is declared a pandemic. We have community spread here in the states already, and the panic is about to rally imo.

Totally agree with this.  But China was hazmatting their government employees and disinfecting everything in sight for weeks before they disclosed how bad things were.  US and other Governments did the same... look at some of the evacuation plane photos from Wuhan and the Diamond Princess.  Cruisers had a mask, workers had hazmat suits with respirators.  The "experts" knew a lot they were not sharing.

And, Cruisers are not as good for local economies as you might think they are.  Speak with locals in European ports in Italy and Croatia and they'll tell you that they would trade ALL the cruisers for more tourists that stay overnight for multiple days.

Cruisers are really hard on infrastructure and in many ports they spend substantially less per person than overnight tourists.  Some island businesses do rely very heavily on cruisers, but sustainable businesses shouldn't.  IMO, if some of these islands get slammed with Virus cases, the damage (physical, emotional and financial) would be worse than being struck by a Cat 5.

I'm sure they are missing cruisers' money now after the quarantine.

There is a small machine that can give results of flu A & B in 5 minutes - but whether a clinic would have it is another thing.  (I had to look it up, but as I work in Microbiology area of a hospital, I can at least recognize what it is talking about).  EDIT  What I haven't taken time to figure out is whether there are similarities between A and COVID 19 that would make the test result still questionable.  If on a molecular level there are similarities, then the result could be questioned.

Cruise ships would 100% have them rapid flu tests.

Even though the infected person just had the flu.  Could be a sign of bad things to come for cruisers and cruise lines.  If anyone has a fever on board it's pretty easy for port authorities to just say "sorry!" rather than do any due diligence about the situation.

    Right.

I mean, I understand where they are coming from with the abundance of caution.

with being said, just because you test positive for the flu doesn't mean that the person does not have covid19 superimposed onto it. you could be really unlucky.

I don't think anyone should use the Diamond Princess as an example of transmission. There were just too many variables that could have led to the outbreak on board. Primarily, we still have no idea how many of the passengers would have tested positive pre quarantine as they didn't test everyone to begin with. While they think patient zero from the Diamond Princess was the man that disembarked in Hong Kong it is not know for sure that he was. Also, some passengers on board were finding loopholes in the quarantine (interacting on balcony's etc..) and crew could have also contributed.

So while it is possible that transmission was happening through vents or pipes there is not enough evidence to say for sure one way or another what went wrong on the Diamond Princess.

I promise you, someone is writing a case series on all 700+ and 4 deaths. It will be published in a big name journal too. Maybe JAMA or NEJM?

I think it is as a practical matter a pandemic now that community spreading has occurred in 3 of the 6 populated continents. But it has not been "declared" a pandemic, although WHO and CDC warnings make it sound inevitable. I suspect there are a number of agreed-upon public health protocols that are being studied and prepared that will be triggered, likely automatically, in most countries once there is official status.

I agree that it is practically. But the CDC says that it isn't a pandemic...yet.

Also our president, who is the most honest stable genius ever, said that covid 19 is "under control".

He had just caused the death of his step grand daughter by his stupid actions and I think most of in that situation would be absolutely distraught and need some sedatives like Chloe's mam and dad took.

The fact he didn't want any made me very suspicious and watching the video compounded my suspicions of Anellos actions and his subsequent story changes.

I have seen TONS of people react to death. I have even seen how others react to death having just killed someone within minutes ago.

There is a wide range of reactions and you cannot go based on what medications they take. For all you know, that person could have an allergy to all their limited meds on board.

Not defending him. Just saying that the world is not black or white.

Lol, I am also a physician, and I am on the infection committee on my hospital.

So no need to be condescending. You never know who might be on the other side of the keyboard. 😉

When do you think RCL will start to entice their Crown and Anchor customers with cheaper fares. They have not been very fair with chartered cruises and make their customers beg for compensation after bumping them with the only intent to make more profit on that cruise.. This is the perfect example where customer retention is important. This not meant as a slight against RCL it is merely intended to point out just how important loyal customers are in times of need. The chances of losing the next generation of cruisers is high because of the problem with Diamond Princes. It’s time for the cruise lines to retain customer interest by being loyal to us now.

I think this is very true. I am a millennial. Even among us who cruise frequently, we are rethinking about celebrating events or vacationing on cruises for the next 12 months. And those around me are young professionals with a skew toward health care.

Other people that I know keep talking about how cruise ships are "petri dishes"

I am basing it on the WHO's assessment of CoVid19

We have never done the haven. No way we could do it with 6 people! Maybe one day......

I think the problem about the concept of many things now in the cruise industry, is that it is no longer an all inclusive vacation. So it irritates people when they see that the bakery is a cost extra, or the chocolate shop is extra, or the Starbucks is extra. When traditionally, everything was included but alcohol.

Cruising is no longer like this.  But i think the thing that really makes some people mad about this particular ship is that they took away the adult only pool area that was free, and used it to make the vibe bigger (I think)

I like to research, and did my homework on this ship. I built in the cost of the vibe the way someone would budget for the haven, my perspective is that it was part of the cost of our cruise, so it could be the cruise we wanted to do.

I loved being able to wander up to the vibe, and get 6 lounge chairs together whenever I wanted, zero stress. It was heavenly. I am certain I would love the haven even more, but its not in the cards right now!

This ship itself is absolutely gorgeous. The staff bend over backwards for you, whether its in the main dining room, or at the Bar, or your room steward. They are so friendly and helpful and want to say yes.

The spaces on the ship are wonderful. I loved the social, the cavern, the mojito bar, they are all like little nooks and crannies there for you to explore. You never felt you were sailing with 4000 other people, you could always walk up to any bar, or space, and find a seat (unless you were late for a specific show)

Well - the one exception was the buffet. Then you felt it. We avoided it as much as possible, and because it was on deck 16 (beside the main pool deck) it was pretty chaotic, especially on sea days.

One weird note about the buffet. The food was overall good. But, they must have an excellent Indian chef aboard because the Indian/ middle eastern food in the buffet was OUTSTANDING. I mean, we discovered it on day 5, and I would sneak in during off hours and get myself a little plate of whatever they had going on. My BFF from Atlanta said it was as good as anything she had ever had at home. I’d completely agree , but living in small town Ontario, cant say we have any great Indian restaurants around....

hmmm, totally off topic, aren’t I?

    Off topic? Yes

    Interesting? Most definitely!

It was a good read. And I LOVE the Indian food on NCL. It is something that I look forward to each and every time I cruise with NCL. It's probably something that I look forward to more so than the steak.  Some of my Indian friends tell me that it is pretty authentic too.

I would not have thought this a weeks ago. But if the Coronavirus keeps going ,it might just be  a matter of adding up the scrap metal value of each ship in The Carnival fleet !!

    haha.

I don't think the cruise industry is dead. But I do think that it will take a huge hit.
