I am going on the Oceana early Feb. I am an outdoor person. Has anybody got some handy tips for me?
-
I also have spent much time on the Aurora, and would advise C deck.
Point one. It is very slightly lower so there would be slightly less movement.Point two. If there is an open deck above you, the crew start tidying up the lounges at about 6 pm so you would get quite a lot of noise from the dragging of chairs/loungers.

They will happily serve you a portion for one.
We did this often on Oceana in November.
The waiter explained that it is just a serving suggestion.
No need to worry, they are very accommodating.

Dear Andy,
It just seems quite strange. However the waiters are always so very obliging and deserve to be treated with respect.

A very Merry Christmas morning to everyone.
And to you also. Here in Jersey we have lovely sunny weather, I wonder if it will last all day.

I've wondered the same. I'm not travelling alone but my friend only likes very simple food and probably won't want to share. I think because people have said they order more than one main or dessert etc that a sharer for one would be no problem.
Surely galley could just as easily produce the required item in smaller portions. -
I have been looking at the sample lunch menus and note that some of my favourite dishes on marked ‘TO SHARE. Very unfortunate, as I am a solo traveller and have nobody to share with. I wonder if the waiters will still accept an order.

The most interesting Peninsula Club lunch I have attended was on Ventura last year. The senior officer on our table was the chief security officer (or whatever his title is) and there was only one other couple on the table, so we all had the chance to chat to him. I asked him what he did before coming to P&O. He replied, "I was in the royal protection squad". I said, "And I guess that's all you're allowed to say". He just smiled and nodded. He did though give us an interesting insight into the processes and procedures involved when passengers don't behave as they should, and he has to get involved.
We were also seated with the security officer. He told us he always made sure he had the troublemakers on his table. I thought that was very funny and we had some really good conversation. To complain to an officer over lunch is very inappropriate. Try going to reception instead -
It seems to be the way things are progressing. The officers do a fantastic job. However they need to remember that it is the passengers who pay their wages. Unfortunately the P & O language doesn’t help. Whoever heard of a ship being called a floating hotel - such rubbish.

I have always found that instead of moaning AFTER the event, find a chef (with a tall hat) and make the point re items on the buffet at the time. Works wonders.

Well as I said, I don’t eat a cooked breakfast but he seemed to be very pleased they had them...he went back for more but they had all gone! 🤣

I only eat French cheese and there never seems to be any, even for the asking.
-
My question was about the lack of continental cheeses, not Stilton which is British.
-
Why is it so difficult to get continental cheese in the MDR in the evenings. I am constantly being told that “we do not put it on the cheeseboard because nobody asks for it”. (How surprising). Earlier this year, it took four days of repeated asking and a visit to the chef at lunchtime to get some. When it finally came, there was no choice, a large piece was just put on my plate.

Andy,
I am going to Spain for two weeks in February and then down to Germany for the third week. I will need to take plenty of winter woollies. Never been to Hamburg before so it will be something new. And just for you, I will sit outside the yacht and compass and learn to play the bagpipes. Actually one of my favourite instruments.

Totally agree about the atrium, but disagree about the quiet areas if the weather is not great.
That was the only let down for us on a beautiful ship.

Never mind, I must be at fault because P and O tell me that piped music is what the passengers want.Christine

Andy,
i think we have communicated before. I share you annoyance when people continue to talk when the Captain is talking. Do they not realise how extremely RUDE this is. Before now, I have even put my finger to my lips to stop a waiter talking, putting my other hand behind my ear.. I can glare with the best of them.

Thank you for putting things into better words than I can.
We were at the 8.15 captains reception and was sure the senior officers were not introduced, but am now doubting myself?? We could not see him and passengers around us were chatting all the way through, so my attention was more fixated in getting annoyed with them..
I do remember his awful jokes though, Dutch cheese is made backwards and something predictable about a Belgian waffle... He made Neil Turnbull seem like Peter Kay😊
The Captain's Remembrance day service was fantastic, truly respectful and emotional.
We sometimes forget that many if not most of the senior officers have a naval background.

Thank you Dave, it sounds similar to the Aurora. Does it overlook the stern? I get up early and all I need is to be nice and quiet, looking at the sea with no piped music but plenty of coffee. Not much to ask is it.

Are they outside areas on the Oceana where you may take your breakfast from the buffet.

The new P and O term for Norovirus is gastro problems. Is there a difference?

We're currently on Arcadia and, whilst norovirus hasn't been mentioned by the captain, he has stated there are reported gastro problems with some passengers. So they have instigated removing anything surplus on tables such as pots and menus and strict handwashing when entering the buffet. Also handrail cleaning is much in evidence and cleaning of chairs in the MDR when guests have finished. I'm wondering if it's tied to it's a 28 night cruise? No scientific reasoning but just a question.
I was on Arcadia two years ago and we had an outbreak then. I actually saw one of the waitresses In the buffet area come out of one of the lavatories and leave without washing her hands. When I remonstrated she said “it doesn’t matter for me because I have gloves on”. I’m not quite sure what difference this made, I did not reportHer as I think this is probably a sacking offence and I had no wish to be party to that. I washed my hands so many times that they became sore, but I didn’t get the virus.

I totally agree; We are welcomed at these ports, and to leave in a noise of jingoistic patriotism makes me ashamed of being British. If anything we should leave whilst playing THEIR National Anthem. I hope P & O see my message and take note. The three blasts on the horn are to say “Goodby and thank you”
