  1. Last time we were in St. Thomas back in 2007, we had a blast doing an all day trip that was a boat ride, three snorkeling stops, a beach lunch on a private island, and then just sailing with unlimited rum punch. It was through the ship...we were on a B2B so can't remember which line.

Since then, we have gotten away from ship excursions and would love to find something similar privately, any recommendations? Also, do I remember correctly that this was the place we snorkeled and saw a ton of sea turtles? My 5 year old would love that, if I am remembering correctly that would be a must!

  2. We are going to Nassau (again) in September....have been there several times and done Junkanoo Beach and some snorkeling excursions. Looking for some ideas that would appeal to a 5 year old, two 30 somethings, and a 65 year old who has knee replacement surgery...a little worried! We don't mind beach but my DH is not a lover of the sun so would prefer something that wasn't just the beach. Would be ok with snorkeling but my son and my MIL wouldn't go in the water so it would have to be something where the boat ride itself was a fun experience too. We have an unlimited drink package on the ship so although alcohol is nice, not necessary. Definitely no tours. lol warned you we were hard...any ideas?

My MIL is in good shape otherwise, can get around just fine but nothing too rugged.

  3. We have something similar...we booked a family suite for our family of 5 but are thinking of taking along someone to help with the kids like a nanny, but don't know who that would be or even if we will want that. We went ahead and booked and just put a possible name in, and if we decide to change the person or cancel later, it won't be an issue.

  4. We originally booked the UDP...sailing with DH, me, my MIL, and our 5 year old son. I didn't like picking something that MIL couldn't take advantage of and I figured we could work up enough OBC to buy the alcohol. This is supposed to be our 10 year anniversary cruise though, and I just couldn't shake the fact that I would love to just not think about anything! Used a warehouse store travel club to knock a little off the cruise and will use that plus a little cash to buy UDP, and switched to UBP. Also have the spa room, so I'm super excited!

  5. It seems you've already chosen, but I thought I'd let you know what we decided...we went with the UDP, and here's why...we are 4 to a cabin, 3 adults and 1 child. Since the 3rd adult (my MIL) doesn't drink soda and doesn't generally drink alcohol, the UBP would be of no benefit for her. For us, with complimentary dining, it would be hard to justify paying for specialty dinners individually, but that is something we would really enjoy. Finally, we should have a total of at least $250 on board credit. We enjoy drinking, but 3-4 drinks a day would be plenty for us. We would have to spend at least an additional $360 on top of that for drinks since we would have to purchase the UDP ahead of time and would end up with $250 with nothing to spend it on since we do private excursions and aren't shoppers.

  6. Someone explained this on a previous post as it was helpful for me...an M6 Guarantee basically means that category is sold out already, so you are guaranteeing you will get that category (if a room opens up) or above. At this point, there would be none of that category available. So you could end up with what they consider a higher category, but what you would consider a less desirable something (such as right below the pool, obstructed view, whatever). If that would bother you, pick the room instead of the guaranty.

  7. I just booked an M9 guarantee...I have been searching high and low for a spa mini suite that sleeps 4 for this fall and it has been impossible to find..I was on a website and just clicked through as I've been checking every day and lo and behold, one pops up! It said I had it temporarily reserved so I went back to the selection page to make sure I input everything correctly and then when I went forward again to the cabin it had switched to guaranty?

I went ahead and booked it as I thought it probably just got glitched up since I went back and forth, but now my stomach is in knots! I know I can't be downgraded (technically) and the only place to really go is an aft facing mini suite or a haven, correct? I am on the Getaway...we really had our heart set on the spa though. Once they assign us a cabin, can they change it on us? I'm worried I'll be nervous til the day we sail that whatever we get assigned will get changed...can you tell I don't like change and things being unpredictable lol?

  8. We booked a cruise with RCCL about 6 months ago and so we got the RCCL credit card to earn some OBC. A combo of the horrific customer service we received with RCCL and some great sales at NCL and we jumped over and booked our next two cruises with them. That puts us at least 3 years out until we book another cruise and it very well won't be RCCL.

I saw online it says they occasionally offer deals for 3rd party merchants for redeeming your points? How often does that happen and what is typical of that? If not, is there a way I could give someone else my points or get OBC and give it to someone else?

  9. I believe the minimum age for the falls is 6, so when we went last year with our son who had just turned 4, we used Courtney Taylor tours and did a private tour. We went river tubing...it was perfect. The tubes all connected and had bottoms, it was just us floating down the river, so peaceful! Some little rapids that made it fun, then a stop that had a little swing, and then it was just peaceful floating. After that he took us to Bamboo Blu and we loved it...I am one who HATES pushy vendors and since it was a private beach there were none. A little restaurant we got some food at to tide us over to lunch, clean bathrooms, not too busy, easy for DS to swim with a floatie.

We ended at Scotchies for a great lunch, and then back to the port. They took great care of our son and we never felt like it was a bad place to be.

  10. We hated St. Maarten when we went a few years ago...the taxi drivers were awful. We only had two of us and they kept bypassing us to get to big parties for more money. When they finally would take us, we were crammed in the back of a van in what should've been a seat for one, with no air. He dropped us off at Orient Beach and said he would be back at 2 pm to pick us up as was requested by the other group we were with.

The pushiness of the vendors on the beach was atrocious, people touching you, harassing you, one guy shoved headphones on my head to listen to a CD he made. We bought chairs and a drink from a husband/wife team that was also doing jet skis...we bought from the guy and then when he was out messing with the jet skis the wife tried to get us to pay again, saying we hadn't paid! She kept insisting until my husband, who is normally very gentle, got really stern and told her to back off. The water was rough and there was a lot of debris, although very beautiful. Did see a few people strolling topless, didn't really bother us though as we didn't have children.

We were more than ready to leave because of the vendors by about noon, but unlike other ports where taxis are plentiful, it was a ghostland. It literally took us 30 minutes of wandering around the beach to flag down a taxi who was still rude, but begrudgingly took us back. I will be ok never going back!

Only port we have ever disliked, would rather do Nassau 10 times than that one again! I've heard Jamaica can be bad for vendors too, but thankfully we hired a great private guide who took us to places where it wasn't an issue at all.

  11. We did an all inclusive for our honeymoon and probably won't do another. The food was good and the place was gorgeous, but there wasn't much to do and we aren't multiple days on the beach people. Plus the entertainment sucked. We hadn't planned on doing any outings but half way through the week we had to do something! It was a pita to arrange the snorkeling and drive there.

But i have a good friend who took a cruise and said he would stick with ais from now on...he didn't do the show or main dining room and drank enough he didn't like paying cruise prices for that.

  12. We have been struggling with this as well...we currently got the UDP because there are 4 of us in the cabin so we can all benefit from it (3 adults and 1 child). I like the idea of being to eat at all the specialty restaurants..I think it's hard to convince DH it's worth it to pay the surcharge. But we've generally been happy with the main dining room on most ships, so we may not miss it?

I just don't know that we'd drink enough to make the UBP package. My DH definitely could, but I think I wouldn't. Plus, my MIL only drinks tea which is free so she couldn't utilize the package at all, whereas the dining she would. So I know in numbers sense, it makes sense to do the UBP, but I feel like we'd get more bang for our buck when it comes to all 4 of us.
