While hiking, we spent the time telling scary stories like how easy it would be for a serial killer to be hiding in the thicket and wait for the unsuspecting hiker.  Yep, scary stories before 10am…

Scary stories...Ha....the day we were there we heard about a mama bear and her cubs very close to the trail!  I don't know if I was happy or sad that we missed that!  We did see a bear...far away...when we took the tram up Mt. Roberts.

It never hurts to bring something for sea sickness with you.  On our first morning at sea leaving Vancouver we had some rocking and rolling and our room steward told us quite a few passengers were sick.  By 1 PM everything was smooth sailing.

I think we were on the same cruise.  I did feel a bit "off" that morning.  Took some meclizine, and some ginger chews.  I don't think they helped, but the Rocking and Rolling stopped, and I was back to normal again!

  3. We did the d3c tour in June.  The cruise was great (first) and so was the land portion.  Denali was one of the highlights of the trip!  It did get tiring though.  We had a cancelled flight from Fairbanks to Chicago to end our trip, got home 33 hours later than expected, and had 2 nights with not much sleep, so that kind of put a damper on the trip!

  4. Hi all, we took our first cruise in June to Alaska.  We were on the Westerdam, and loved both the cruise and land portions of our journey.  We are thinking of taking a winter caribbean cruise.  We usually spend a week in Cozumel at an All Inclusive resort.  We like to relax at the beach!  Can you just "relax" on a cruise??  I feel like we would have to see things in the ports, and it might not be as restful as a resort.   Decisions!!

  5. Thanks for your trip report!  I enjoyed it very much.  I'm so sad to read that you missed the Tundra Wilderness Tour...that was one of the highlights of the trip!  We did the covered wagon ride with breakfast...was a nice trip.  I hope you're feeling better.  My Hubby got sick on the land portion of the trip, felt poorly the last 2 days in Fairbanks, had a cough, but was able to do the adventures that were scheduled.  By the time we got home though, he was worse.  He had pneumonia when he went to the dr....

We were on the same cruise, but did the D3C tour...saw Exit glacier in Seward.  We ended up with a cancelled flight in Fairbanks, and were rescheduled 28 hours later...that was not a fun ending to our trip 😞  Thanks for sharing your adventure!

  6. Hi, we were on a cruise/land tour in June.  I wore my tennis shoes for everything.  We did some hikes, nothing extremely strenuous, but they were fine for everything.  I wore my crocs while on the ship.  Have a great trip!

  7. We were there the first 2 weeks of June...the scenery from the ship was awesome!  Lots to see just sitting on a deck or from our balcony!  We did do excursions, but also had some quiet time on the ship.  In Juneau our balcony faced the land, I sat on our balcony and watched the eagles soaring over Mt. Roberts!  If you like fabric, or yarn, there are great shops in Skagway!

  8. We had the same issue.  I heard there were buses if you walked a few blocks.  Check out the museum near the university campus.  Some people went to the hot springs.  My hubby was sick that day...a cold virus that ended up to be pneumonia,  so we stayed close to the hotel...not much to do there.

  9. We were there earlier this month.  The Westmark was OK, nothing fancy, but clean and kept up.  There was not much to do in the general area...walked a few block to the Thai House for dinner.  A few blocks away, you can get a city bus to go to other areas.  We did go to the museum near the University campus...was interesting.   The Fairbanks airport was a problem for us...our flight was cancelled because of mechanical problems, and we were rescheduled on a flight 28 hours later...then, that flight was delayed...got home Monday at 3 pm, were supposed to get home on Sunday at 6 am.  Not good memories of the end of our 2 week Alaska adventure!

  10. We just returned from our Alaska adventure.  We left our hotel around 11 am and walked to Canada Place.  There were a lot of people already there at the port.  We've never cruised before, so didn't know that to expect...there was "quite the process" to get on board.  I didn't check the times, but all went smoothly.  I don't remember how long it took to get our luggage, not too long.  Sorry I'm not much help, but have a great time!  Our land/sea adventure was great!  We were on the Westerdam!

We did the Alaska-Yukon-cruise a couple of years ago, with three nights in Denali. IIRC, the train left Anchorage about 9am, and arrived in Denali about 4 or 4.30. By the time you get off the train, get on the bus, drive to McKinley Chalet Lodge and get settled, it'll be dinner time. The next day, you'll probably take the Tundra Wilderness tour, a day-long bus ride into the park (assuming it's part of your package; ours included it). Again, you probably won't return until late afternoon.

The third day is free, so you're on your own. The park's visitor center and sled dog area is over a mile away,  but not a bad walk. My wife went to both these places in an afternoon, and thoroughly enjoyed them,  especially the dogs (she's the alpha dog at home).

    Good luck!

We're going in 3 weeks...YAY!...we were trying to figure out how to see sled dogs.  This looks like our opportunity! Can you walk from the hotel to the park visitor center?  When I look on the map, it says the visitor center is 3 miles sway.
