If you arrive early, you will end up waiting in the boarding lobby until they allow people on the ship. If you get there at 12, you will be waiting in the huge winding line to check in but once done you can get right on the ship. I've done both and prefer to check in early to maximize my time on the ship the first day.

^ Agree. If anything, I felt customer service was better after they started sailing again. -
If you are flexible, then booking flights thru the cruise line is a good idea. I did a 2-day deviation prior to my last cruise leaving Seattle to avoid any issues. Next time I do an Alaskan cruise I will definitely do a 1-day post-cruise deviation to avoid a red-eye.
