  1. I haven't spent any $$ on airfare, hotel, or anything yet.  I just have been researching rates. I see that the 3 week mark is usually pretty good. I just hope for the first week of August something good shows up if I wait, otherwise it's next year for me!

OP,  just checking if you will be  traveling with more than your Global Entry card as proof of US citizenship.

(Passport, passport card, Enhanced Drivers License, NEXUS card, certified/original birth certificate  w/gov't issued photo ID)

Yeah. I have a passport, the Real ID, etc. All I brought last time was just my passport and the Trusted Traveler ID. There was no initial at the port.

  3. Thanks. Yeah I'm looking into flying Seattle now instead of Vancouver. The bus takes you straight to Canada Place arriving at 12:35 PM estimated. Wasn't sure if that was calling it close or not. Been to Vancouver before so really don't care about sightseeing. The Amtrak from Seattle unfortunately is already sold out at the time that I would have needed. Norwegian lists the ship as departing at 4PM.

  4. LMAO, hi me!

I'm the same way. I'm a solo cruiser and ONLY do last minute cruises since they significantly lower the fees (or drop them!). I did it 2 years ago in Alaska, and I'm trying to do the same exact thing now. I'm in LA and flights to/from the West Coast of the US and Canada aren't usually too high last minute. That said, I was foolish and canceled a one way LAX to Vancouver flight for $145 which is now at over $400 =/ .

  5. Norwegian Cruise leaves at 4PM and all passengers must be on board by 2PM.

I have Global Entry/TSA Precheck (American citizen). I cruised out of Vancouver 2 years ago and there was some sort of special line I was allowed to be on where there were only a few people on it (I did not use a kiosk...there were actually workers at a counter). I think this was the "preclearance line" (not sure the term that they used).

What would be the absolute latest that I would can actually be at the port to make it on the ship on time?

If you have to get back to work by the second week of August, I would go to Alaska the first week of August and hope.  I saw some very good activity in Steep Creek at Mendenhall in the last week of July one year, and a lot of fins and eagerly jumping salmon out in the bay in Sitka in mid July, waiting to get back into the hatchery waters where they were born.  Definitely the best salmon I've ever seen were in Ketchikan in late August...but I saw a few jumping at the fish ladder in mid July one year.  So, I think there's hope for you.  Just know that there are no guarantees.

Thanks :) Yeah I think on this trip I am going to have to prioritize things. I found a great last minute rate that leaves this June, but I know really the first week of August is ideal for me based on what I want to see. It's either watching salmon swim upstream for additional $$$, or save a lot of $$$$ but no salmon 😞

  7. I know planning a trip around at the hopes of seeing salmon spawn is a bit foolish but it's something that I have always intrigued me. I know salmon runs are typically hard to predict aside from saying that they occur in the summer. I read that 2018 was a bad season for salmon. Are there any predictions of when they will spawn this year? Just from reading past things on Tripadvisor it seems that the spawning at Ketchikan Creek seems to really just been end of July, August, and beginning of September. Is the middle of June traditionally too early?

When you look at a deck plan, if you see the room divided (one big section, and a tiny section next to the water) that is a balcony.

If the room does not have a small segment near the water, it is a ocean view.

Ah.  That's helpful. What do the colors mean though?

  9. I'm trying to understand the layouts of the Jewel on NCL's website. I know the balconies are on Dec 8.9, and 10, but I cannot figure out on the diagram which color is for the balcony state rooms. Can someone please tell me how to differentiate on the diagrams between the oceanview state rooms and the balcony rooms? Thanks

I hope you will jump back on and let us know if you were successful! One time I got an upgrade from inside to balcony for $75 bucks, and I'm still looking for a story to top that, lol.

I'll let you know! I'm waiting for the rooms to drop a little bit more. I'm getting greedy!  As much as I would want a balcony, the inside room is just so cheap compared to it. We'll see.

  11. So I've been eyeing last minute cruises to Alaska that leave Vancouver (I loved Glacier Bay and want to experience it again). Almost 2 years ago on the dot I got an guaranteed obstructed oceanview cabin for a total of $753 (solo cabin just me....awesome price). Right now there is only really an amazing deal on the guaranteed indoor cabin for $553 (also great price). The obstructed oceanview is too high for me (I don't make a ton of $ and I plan on spending $$$ on a lot of pricey excursions).

I've heard about people (usually people who have been on several NCL cruises or those who get the really nice cabins) getting emails about upgrades. Does NCL typically do this for cheap people like me or do they not even bother?

  12. What are some excursions that you can do on Icy Strait that you cannot do at the other stops in Skagway, Ketchikan , and Juneau? When I look at a list of excursions, it's the same stuff.  Is there anything unique about Icy Strait?

I just checked my old papers.  The Family times were either 5-7 or 4-8 pm in the Solarium.  On one occasion, I spoke to security on duty and the family was asked to leave.  That was at 2 pm.  The times are clearly stated in the daily program of activities.

When we did Alaska on Solstice last summer, the temperatures were in the upper 60's to  low 70's.  There were some people in the pools.  The Solarium was off limits for children except during times they were allowed to use that area.  That was typically between 5 and 7 pm and not every day.  That is up to the discretion of the powers running the ship.

Did workers actually enforce this though? So If i want to go to the hot tub say at 2pm, if workers don't give af, kids will be in the Solarium yes?
