  1. Probably taste like ship and are best eaten as a floater.;p

One of the best ship pies I have ever eaten was on the Diamond Princess a few years ago. We only discovered them a couple of days before the cruise ended, in the International Cafe and it was our first port of call for the last few days on board, could not get enough of them.

The only downside was that I had to go to Woop Woop more than usual when we got home.

  2. Unfortunately any advice you may get ( if you are lucky to hear from them at all) will be such that I would be highly suspect and not rely on the information they provide. Just like many of their overseas consulates and embassies, they will tell you "anything" that may or not be true to get you to deal with them or an associate, usually at a much higher cost than you can find elsewhere

Also the op is referring to a Mekong river cruise not Halong Bay![/quot

Just to clarify my first paragraph in the above quote - I am referring only to Vietnam Tourism Offices and Vietnamese Consulates and embassies.

I put a lot of reliance on posts on Cruise Critic and Trip Advisor, would not make bookings or travel arrangements and research without reference to either forum as appropriate.

  3. Ship Creek is an actual place in QLD but ironically sits inland about 400km west of Bundaberg.

Woop Woop does not officially exist, but if it did you can bet that Ship Creek is indeed nearby!

    Cheers

What, are you saying the ad I am seeing on TV is not actually factual?

What a letdown, what a disappointment, it's enough to make me want to drive down to Inaloo and seek out the attached pub for a stiff drink or two.

  4. Has anyone else recently been up Ship Creek in Woop Woop?

Looks like an interesting place to visit as I have seen ads on the TV for a family whose car and caravan is broken down up Ship Creek in Woop Woop. The family in the ad, called Ammi as I recall - good old Aussie name for sure, seemed quite taken by the area.

Not particularly fond on travelling in a caravan but if there were any cruises going there I would be most interested - can or do cruise ships go up Ship Creek?

Any advice from someone that has been there or knows of cruise lines visiting the area would be appreciated!

  6. Another recommendation would the the Swell restaurant up my neck of the woods but you would need a car to get there (easy 25 minute drive from the CBD. Right on the beach at Mullaloo (located in the surf life saving club) and you will be right there on one of the best beaches in Perth. Have been several times since opening and have never been disappointed.

Should you have any red or white wine left over, cork it and drop it off at my place which is nearby, cannot have good wine wasted.

  7. If you are into Vietnamese food - you must try the Viet Hoa in William Street (easy 15 minute walk) in the CBD. Been around for years, take you own grog, no corkage and the food is as good now as it was 20 years ago - open seven days for lunch and dinner and no need to book unless going in a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Many other restaurants around it, Viet Hoa often a few at the door waiting to get it (you will not have to wait long if at all) and all the other restaurants around will be only be half full - they must be doing something right - and cheap too by Aussie standards

Stay as long as you like the staff will work and clean up around you!

  8. Did a similar cruise in September last year with a company booked out of Australia (they had a special deal on) and had a good time despite getting a bug half way through the trip. Our ship was fortunate that we were able to sail all the way up to Siem Reap across the lake which is not often possible due to water levels.

I think you need to find out more details about the quality of the ship the company is using as I could not find too much detail in the web site you posted and it might not be as good as one might expect. Do your research

  9. I just heard on the radio at 3.00 am this morning that fly fishing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Plenty of flies here so we will probably become a mecca for overseas visitors wishing to participate in this new fad.

Alice Springs (stepping off city for a visit to Ularu) is very well placed for tourist to try fly fishing in the Todd River, should be plenty of flies there in the summer time.

But don't be tempted to catch a very rare, elusive and rarely seen eight legged colourful Sailfish that proliferates the river for only a few days each year - in August, as after all, your are only there to try fly fishing and the sailfish apparently scream like hell if caught on a hook.

  10. Passports, bulk of cash and all cards (for both wife and myself) are kept in a money belt type of bag under my clothes. Only take it out when needed and carry enough cash for the day. Don't even trust hotel safes, and never leave it in a bag when flying or on a train. ship or bus/

Get a few funny looks when I unbuckle the belt and drop the daks but who cares - not much to see anyway.

Have been travelling for years everywhere and never had a problem - you cannot let your guard down at any time (trousers excepted)

  11. This is no option arriving AS that late would make us drive in the dark and that would be for us "left" drivers a very bad idea.

No one would recommend driving at night in the "dead center"

Why not stay in Alice Springs the night you fly in and head out to the rock the next day?

After all, you did seem keen to go and we are just advising that the flight you want to be on is a very risky option given the time the ship arrives and that particular flight departs.

Just trying to be of help here!

  12. Good day,

I am planning our very first visit to Australia and we have some spare time between

2 cruises ( next year both cruises leaving Sydney )we have one week to spend

and we would love to drive from AS to Uluru and visit the red centre of Australia.

Our cruise arrives according files at 6.30 am Overseas PassengerT

(Ovation of the Seas coming from NZ March 2019 )

Checking flights to AS the only one that flies directly is at 9.50 am ( domestic airport )

can we make it(without any stress ) to the airport in time to catch this flight ?

anyone has experience about time ship needs for clearance ?

we know we can take a train from CQ which is the easiest way to get to the airport but I need to figure out how many time I need getting off the ship with my carryon Luggage ( customs …. )

I would like to avoid spending a day at the airport or in Sydney city and we can use this extra day on our trip through the red centre

( we visit Sydney for a week earlier on our trip )

    thanks for the help

    best regards from Belgium

I think you would be taking an unacceptable risk to book that flight at that time to Alice Springs - there is really no margin for error and you will have also had to make all your bookings for Alice Springs etc and stand to perhaps lose money if the flight is not possible or you cannot make it in time

I would strongly suggest you look for a later flight, even if you have to change planes to get there

No doubt some Sydneysiders will be able to be more specific about your timings.

  13. Plenty of good and new hotels etc in Perth and apparently a bit of an oversupply so you should be able to get a good deal. If coming from USA or the UK, our prices will be a good deal for you given the exchange rate differences, just make sure your booking is in Aust $

Trip Advisor is a good place to start your search for Hotel Accomodation.

  14. Most cruises to the Caribbean depart from the East Coast (unless you transit the Panama Canal) so best to select your cruise departure port options then look at the flights. Some airlines may offer options whereby you may be able to fly with just one stop to the departure point, Emirates may offer that choice but am sure there will be others

Love the Caribbean, been there twice and was very surprised to find Duty Free duty free like in the old days here.

  15. In all seriousness, you are of course correct.

But the point was that Fremantle is only about 10 miles from the centre of Perth. So if wheels were suddenly uninvented overnight, it is theoretically within a day's walking distance, and so there's no need to travel to Fremantle a day or two before. However, I wouldn't recommend walking - hence the smiley.

All the cruisers I know (or those I see on cruise ships) are such that most are lucky to make the trip from their cabin to the Food Court three times a day for food and refreshment.

I doubt that the percentage who could do the walk - Perth to the cruise terminal in Fremantle would be less than 1% of the cruising population.

But I did miss the smiley and am use to making posts that most people on first reading think that I am serious

Have a look at the link below to see what I mean

  16. No need: Fremantle is a suburb of Perth, and closer to the city centre than many other suburbs. If push came to shove, you could walk from the city centre to the ship on the same day as your cruise departure. ;)

I think what Globaliser means is that the Fremantle Train Station is not far from the Cruise Terminal - probably a 500 metre distance but the shortest route does involve getting over a pedestrian bridge.

I would stay in Perth, use the free inner city transport (called Cat buses) to get around the city, which is quite small by world standards and also the suburban train service to venture out further (like Fremantle for instance which would be about a 25 minute train ride from Perth)

If you search this forum you will find threads about the best places to stay etc - was a recent topic

  17. I now found a cruise and that does not help in getting to know Australia. The embarkation will be in Perth and the ship will then head west. I will therefore not see anything of Australia on the cruise.

The previous suggestions did not mention Perth. I imagine that the reason could be, that it is so far from the other places that were suggested. However it could also mean, that it is not a prime sight.

May I ask for suggestions to visit Australia for 5 days including departure in Perth? Should I rather than spend 5 days in Perth of which (let's say) 2 would be wasted or just arrive 2 days later or what other city should I fly into and then transfer from?

Does this mean once you depart Perth then you will not be visiting other Australian Ports.

That being the case, spend your time in Perth with perhaps a few self drive day trips out of the city.

PLenty to do in Perth and surrounds - Go to Ports of call Australia and search Perth and Fremantle, plenty of info there.

Best city in the world in my opinion but am somewhat biased as I live here.

  18. I read that the ship will get visas for you onboard to visit Vietnam but if we are planning to do an overnight in Bangkok, Thailand is a visa required and does the ship provide this at a cost for you also?

I know Aussies don't need a visa and I am fairly confident that most Foreigners are granted a free 30 day stay on arrival.

TO be sure, ask the question on Trip Advisor Thailand forum and include your nationality.
