The Baths are not actually on Tortola. They are located on Virgin Gorda. It's a short ferry ride to Virgin Gorda.

We did this on our own 3 years ago. You may want to Google "ferry from Tortola to Virgin Gorda". They run a very reliable ferry service between the islands. You then catch a shuttle to bring you from the dock to the Baths. We spent a half day at Virgin Gorda, caught the ferry back to Tortola, and then spent the rest of the day hanging out in Road Town, Tortola near the cruise dock. Drank a few Painkillers and really enjoyed them.

The British Virgin Islands suffered significant damage during the past hurricane season. Please visit their attractions and help them recover.

I think both Uber and taxi are around $30-$35.

I would say after 10:30 or so. Only a 20-30 minute ride to the airport.

We will be on Carnival Triumph in August returning to port at 8am. How risky to book flights at 11am or noon? How long would it normally take to make it back to airport?

Shouldn't be too risky. It's about a 20-25 minute drive to the airport.

Celebrity's home porting in New Orleans or just a stop in for Mardi Gras?

We did an 8 day last year on Viking from Nuremburg to Budapest on the Main/Danube. It was a great trip. We had a 3 day extension in Prague beforehand and 1 extra day in Budapest. Beautiful scenery and culture. Lots of locks to traverse. Their lock system was very interesting. We will definitely do it again.

It's definitely doable. You'll have to walk around the Convention Center up Julia Street to the Port of New Orleans Place. You may want to take a test walk. The last time we did it there were no sidewalks on Port of New Orleans. I think there is also a sign that says "No Pedestrians". We walked from the port to meet up with our ride at Mulate's.

I think we'd be more interested in seeing the lower river communities.

We've been to New Orleans before, taken the paddleboat, taken the ferry across the river..... so for us I think Port would be better. What do you think?

If I was doing from my balcony and that part is important, I would do port. When we came in on the CCL Sunshine's transatlantic, we watched it on the highest deck we could find. Being able to look over to the east and west banks was very nice. I've always been fascinated by the delta so having that view was great. I have quite a few friends who grew up in those communities and it was great seeing their hometowns.

You will see a lot more of the city as you arrive.

Correct when entering the city. You will see more of the lower river communities(Empire, Venice, Boothville, Buras and Port Sulphur) on the port side coming up.

How quickly do we have to pick up your bags?

 

We are cruising into Galveston, and wondering if we can sneak out of the terminal and do things for a couple of hours instead of hauling our bags around.

The place to stash your bags is called the Cruise Stop.

It's at the corner of 25th and strand.

The address is 2418 Strand.

You can put your luggage there for a while .Then walk around the Strand and walk over to Fisherman's Wharf. Everything is walkable.

From someone else: I used them recently and they charged $5 per bag. No reservations needed unless you are storing more than 5 bags

Hotels are catacorner from each other on Canal. The JW is newer and a little nicer. I would do the JW. Easy access to the quarter.

Beaucajun, thanks for the thread link, looks like some good information, I will read through it to help me make my decision. I just hadn't seen much information on staying and departing from the New Orleans port.

No problem. We live a couple hours away from New Orleans and make the trip to the city 10-12 a year. We've stayed at most of the hotels near the port. We've never had a bad experience at any of them.

Normally when we visit we stay a little further from the port in the CBD area. It's close to the Quarter(short walk) but the prices are generally lower than staying in the Quarter. I recommend all new tourists stay in the Quarter on their first visit. I've been there hundreds of times and never tire of it.

Try this discussion. Uber or taxi from airport to hotel and back will work. Both comparable in price. Many taxis use minivans as transportation.

We'll try to leave it in good shape when we get off on the 11th. No promise that there will be any alcohol left.

staying at the hampton inn convention center - does anyone know if there's a straight-ish path to get to the port without walking back towards the julia street station?

There is not. The convention center spans a few blocks along the boulevard starting at Julia and heading upriver toward the Crescent City Connection. No way to cut through it.

So this is feasible when staying at the Residence Inn?

I'm not Greg but your answer is yes. Just walk down St. Joseph to Convention Center Blvd and take a left then right on Julia. See his map above.

This was great info! I used it to make our decision on where to stay! Initially we chose the Prytania, but switched when it was learned they don’t provide transportation to the port. We chose the Country Inn

Good place to stay if you don't want to experience New Orleans. You'll be a ways out of the city center.

We used EZcruise parking. They provide a sizeable discount if you don't take their shuttle and walk the 2 short blocks to the terminal. For us it was easy and well worth it. Not having to wait on a shuttle.

Real easy from the HI Superdome. Exit hotel and take a left, left on Poydras to Convention Center Blvd, right on Convention to the end then left on Henderson then another left on Port of New Orleans Place. Terminal on right. Easy drop off.

Drivers then head out on Port of NO Place to left on Julia. Right on Convention Center then left on Poydras up to Loyola. Right on Loyola to hotel on right.
