  1. Sounds like the cruise lines have been 'dumping' passengers OFF the ships into the nightmare of the airport?

    Maybe they need this:

(///The governor just stated if you can't get out of any mandatory evacuation zone, whether for fuel or any reason at all, call 1-800-955-5504, right now! He said they will do anything in their power to help get anyone in a mandatory evacuation area out. Even if you are elderly, disabled, have pets, have no money, any reason at all---they will get you and your loved ones out.)- from a post via other forum

If Irma is as bad as it looks like it is going to be, then it will be a week before the ports reopen, providing it hits as scheduled, before Sid's cruise.

(love the space phone, my hubby needs the space phone 9168 model)

  2. I wonder why preparedness folks overlook the obvious (to me).

RE: bottled water...you know that a storm is coming.

You know that the stores are short.

What is wrong with filling up your household containers you already have in your kitchens with tap water while it is still running?

My cousin in Houston (who was fortunate to be on an island with power the entire time), put 5 gallon buckets in the yard to fill with rainwater for flushing toilets in the event the water was shut off. We, living in the country, always fill up the bathtubs for the same purpose when it merely rains, in case the power goes out and the wells don't pump.

In a pinch, we have old clothes we could burn (if we couldn't find dry tinder) to BOIL water to drink. (Boiling 5 minutes kills parasites, let cool before drinking.)

  3. If money is not an issue...

at their AGE, why not just take the bull by the horns and GIFT the cruise? Make everyone happy, forgive, and just never do it again? Most likely, this will be the last cruise GM has with her sister. Ever. Hopefully, everyone makes it through the cruise with no medical issues. And taking away unnecessary stress on the blood pressure for all concerned? PRICELESS.

  4. As long as you get ON the ship (during bad weather)...

Someone asked me yesterday if I still wanted to take a cruise... I said You BETCHA...I'd like to be on right now. They thought I was crazy. But, if you are ON they go around the mess.

However, those trying to get on the NEXT sailing, different story. THEY were the ones who were 'stranded'. The news these days...they just don't know what they are talking about. Makes you wonder what they use google for... Not research or first hand experience. Sad that face-booker is more reliable for news.

  5. Why would you get off in NOLA and stay a week with 6 people staying in a hotel, eating out, then renting a car to get back to Galveston? When Carnival is housing them, feeding them ,entertaining them and will get them back to Galveston free when it's safe.

    ...

Sent from my iPad using Forums

Why? Because unless you are in a 'lucky' area..until the roads are open, you won't be going anywhere. If you have a car parked in Galveston (I wrote at the beginning of the week, mind you)...it won't be going anywhere for a week (as of today, pretty accurate). It is really about...where do you live? The cars are not getting around yet in Houston from Galveston. So, if you drove in from say... Dallas...and parked in Galveston (I was not being specific to Aggie/OP)...you'd be better off getting of ship in NOLA (BEFORE the next wave of rain from Harvey gets THERE) and dealing with car later. UNLESS you have plenty of time and don't have to worry about getting in to work. Logistically, it is getting FROM Galveston TO the other side of Houston that I was making my observation on.

Now as far as today is concerned... I have turned off the TV and didn't watch at all yesterday. Too much. I have family inside the NE Loop of 610... they are on an island, safe, with power. Doesn't get any better than that. Praise the Lord. Another family member going to work today at IAH, supervising janitor staff..making progress on clean up. His house dry, safe. Another family member on the Conroe side. Safe, dry, with power. Blessed.

And the Cajun Navy is on site. THANKS VOLUNTEERS! So everything is under control, as well as can be expected.

  6. I don't know if knowing or not knowing is better.

I've always been of the mindset...if I'm on the ship, I will deal with unpleasantness that happens when I am gone when I get home. The ship is a haven of bliss. Galveston (as of Monday) seems to be doing well. The weather channel coverage has been the best...but...maybe you should be prepared...things are not exactly being over dramatized. It is really bad in Houston and the SW area.

My opinion...if anyone had flights scheduled: get off in New Orleans while you can. (Harvey expected to dump some precip there around Thrs/Fri.)

If you have a vehicle at the port...not sure what will be best. If your gas tank is full enough to get you home, I'd try it (depending on whether Harvey goes back out to Gulf and restrengthens for another swipe). If I was going to gas up on the way home? I'd get off in NOLA and wait a week, pay the parking fees.

  7. I couldn't agree more! I get so freaking angry when stupid people who live in areas which flood refuse to leave their homes before a major weather event and then call for rescue (ie my husband) involving taking a boat through floodwaters to pull their sorry behinds out and take them to a shelter. It should just be left to Darwinism.

There are over TEN MILLION people in the area with the flood warnings...and not all of them in NORMAL flood zones. If someone has lived an area for 100 years, that has never flooded before...all of the hotels are FULL...they live in a 2 story house an hour from the coast... They then have to decide...do I have enough GAS to get OUT of the city? (Even a full tank may not be enough to get to the NEXT gas station. I know for a fact that 2 major gas stations, one being a supercenter WMT are out of gas in Palestine, TX 4 hours from port.) What if they are stuck in traffic trying to leave? What if the roads are already flooded and they make things worse?

There are many factors that may preclude getting out of Houston. Some people can't afford to leave and don't make decisions until the power goes off. Last night, speaking to 2 relatives in different parts of Houston metroplex, everything was fine in their areas, power still on. And then the rain hit, as projected by the Weather Center.

While people were wondering if they should go (RCL ALWAYS lags behind Carnival on good weather related decision making. -opinion, not supported with facts, but research could probably do.)...and try to make the next cruise... overnight, all the worst case predictions are coming into fruition. The port authorities are well aware of people ON the cruise ships. They want them in asap. BUT, they are not paying attention to the next week people. They probably assume incorrectly that no one in their right mind will be ABLE to get there. Galveston has only two ways to get to it. Ferry, which is closed until further notice. And the I45 freeway. Anyone who DOES get off the ship (my guess is Wed/Thrs.), won't be able to get through Houston to get anywhere until the rains stop.

POINT being... all the local news agencies have been saying...STAY PUT. So, if you are staying put because it looked like the best option at the time...you might find yourself in a previously unknown flood zone. It looks like Katrina from the pics coming in across the state. On a TEXAS sized proportion. Realistically, where could 10 million people have gone TO? ( Darwinism... Bless your pea-picking heart.)

  8. When you 'cash out' on the machine, you don't just walk away. You have to complete the transaction by hitting the button to put the WINNINGS BACK onto your player bank which is tied to your Sail & Sign card. Instead of waiting until the end of the cruise, you can then go to the casino cage and ask them to cash out your funds. Don't forget to get the player bank money from the cage by the last day of the cruise. It won't automatically be applied to your Sail & Sign balance.

  9. :D My husband last October on the Freedom... playing the table game Ultimate Texas Hold 'em. Minimum bet was $5 and a single hand ends up costing a minimum of $20. He was betting the max bet $25 per and had bet before the flop an Ace/Queen off suit. So, he had $150 on the hand and another $25 on the sucker side bet. I think there was four to the Royal Flush on the board and the card missing was the Queen. When the other players had the other 2 Queens he realized...HE had the Royal. I've never seen him so flustered. I had gotten up and went to the room for something and was gone about 10 mins. I sat back down and he said...somebody has the RF.

It paid $14k. He gave everyone at the table a black chip (6 or 7 players) and tipped the dealers somewhere around $1500, I think. He kept playing and before I made him stop for dinner he had won back all the money he had given away.

We paid off our ship account, started charging everything we could and still had to report excess of $10k with customs. It was easy...and we got out of town QUICKLY on embarkation!

And as an added bonus... it was on the last night of the cruise and the casino still hasn't gotten it back!!!! lol But, we've gotten a couple of really good offers I REALLY wanted to take...and would have if work would have allowed the time.

  10. From my personal experience on a Premier casino cruise... we did not purchase FTTF. The luggage tags noted fttf, we were directed to the priority lounge and boarded with them. The rest of the FTTF benefits were NOT included. The room was NOT ready for bag drop off. We did NOT get the faster guest services line.

What we DID get: priority boarding and luggage delivery; the faster debarkation. However, the disembarkation was not clearly communicated to us. We didn't know that we simply had to go down to the 'right' floor to get off when we were ready, instead of waiting upstairs with everyone else. There was no letter or anything to say where to wait or when to get off. Confusing. Apparently, we should have gone to the unknown lounge with the FTTF folks.

  11. But that's why you cabin door has a deadbolt.

Um... don't forget to un-bolt the deadbolt if your DH or DW is out and you go to sleep with earplugs in. I automatically flip the thing and get into trouble with this. I get up the next am and...sleepless, angry spouse.

  12. I have done it.

The guest services guy questioned my loading such a large amount ($5k) on our sail & sign card midway through the Premier casino cruise...but, what can I say? $500 day budget per player for 7 days...and we were losing. I had planned on spending HALF that amount and using the rest for our next cruise payment. I thought it wasn't going to work out...but, hubs ended up winning $14k with a Royal Flush and.. FAMILY is cruising with us in December, our expense.

After settling our ship account, we had to go through customs and declare a good deal.

    *not a fan of Vegas.*

  13. Hey there! My wife and I are book on the Breeze in stateroom 2276. Never been in a Cove Balcony but very much looking forward to it. Can you tell me about the electrical outlets in this room? How many, type and location?

It has been a while, but if my memory serves me... there was ONE outlet by the dressing mirror. We bring a 3 outlet rotating travel plug with 2 usb ports in it.

  14. I don't know about that... I've never had a problem or seen anyone denied any particular size suitcase. It becomes an 'issue' if it can't fit through the security scanners for a carry on. Otherwise, you check it with the porters. As an overpacker, my husband and I bring a rolling garment bag, a rolling suiter and 2 rolling carryon bags. If I trusted the bag throwers, I mean HANDLERS I'd check all but one carryon size. The important thing is make sure that you can handle your own two(?) bags. Do they roll/push/pull with one hand? TEST it in the store and if it spins easily...good luggage.

  15. I have a super mini fan (3 inch palm fan) which I purchased at Wal-mart a couple of years ago for $2 in the summer. I also used it during a deck muster...and it is my breath of FRESH air in the casino. Particularly if I am sitting next to an impolite or 6 pack a day walking lung cancer contributor. It is very powerful and if the smoke is going right to my face, I can create my own smoke free zone.

  16. People !! Read the entire post please. It specifically asked about a cruise for ****young adults***. Magic all the way. And yes i have been on both.

I disagree. Young adults, definitely Oasis, IMO. Young CHILDREN, Carnival. The 'stuff' to do on Oasis class includes more ACTIVE things like rock climbing, ice skating. The Carnival kids program is great, for younger ages, but the older ones get left to their own devices a lot..with a club of their own to hang out in. I've been on both, as well.:)

  17. I always bring my small travel clock/white noise machine with me in my carry on. It also has a plug in where I can put ear buds in if my snoring husband (sorry neighbors!) is still watching whatever ball game is on tv when I'm ready to nap/sleep. It's by Sound Oasis. More expensive than most, but my first I bought half price on overstock. When it wore out, I bought another one.
