We are on the Emerald Princess now and will be sailing through the Panama Canal later in the week. I want to go out on the observation deck above the bridge but I want to know what time they open the doors to allow access to this area?

Early, I went up just after 6AM and the chairs were already half full when we did it on Emerald at Christmas time

  2. I have lived in both Montreal and Quebec city and both are great places to visit.  If you wanted to stay in Montreal and travel to Quebec city by train you can do it from $120 for two in economy class or $250 for two in business class.  The business class comes with a meal drinks included (wine and alcohol are included for trips at lunchtime or after.  I would suggest business class for you as it is one way and the seats are a bit nicer.  There is a train that leaves Montreal central station  at 08:36 and gets you into Quebec (Gare du Palais) at around 11:52. Check here for allowances Train baggage allowance | VIA Rail.  We regularly take the train from Ottawa to Montreal and Quebec city and it is a nice ride.  The Gare du Palais station is right downtown a 5 minute care ride from the pier.

I'm also curious about the references to flying into Quebec. There are a couple of good flights for us from LAX that fly through Montreal and connect to Quebec, both are just $17 more in price than just flying into Montreal, so it seems to make sense. Just wondering if there is a reason for concern?

When you are flying through to Quebec as your final destination with your luggage checked through, would you go through Canadian immigration in Montreal before your connecting flight, or at your final destination in Quebec?

Just wondering in order to assess the timing of the layovers.

You clear customs in Montreal, prior to flying on to Quebec city, you may not need to pick up your bags, you have to ckeck with your airline.  Usually plan at least a 2 hour layover or a bit more if you can arrange it.

It seems that Dining reservations have only opened up for the first sailings.

With the new Three Tier system, and the new venues onboard, I think that maybe getting the dining reservations system sorted out has been a work in progress???

    Three tier system?

Are they still available upon request on the ship? I would think that once in your cabin, if you ask Stewart nicely, he/she should be able to supply one?

    Not anymore

Just off the Emerald Princess on the Panama Trip ending in Fort Lauderdale on Monday.

What's happened to the MDR dress policy of no shorts.

On this cruise there was more men wearing shorts and tee shirts than trousers and shirts also noticed guys wearing what looked liked swim wear, flip flops baseball caps and my wife also intimated that some of the women's dress sense was just as bad.

As for formal night I would say about 25% dressed for the evening but shorts were still in abundance in

    the MDR.

Same thing on the cruise before yours Ford Lauderdale to LA, I am not sure if it is fleet wide but the Emerald Maitre D's are not holding any sort of standards in the MDRs.

  7. Anyone else miss the blue cloth tote bags they used to give out?  We still have a few and always bring them onboard with us to tote things around in.  We always get asked where we got them.  You can’t get them anymore that I can see, it would be nice if they at least had them available to buy.

I have never seen the indication that non alcoholic drinks are excluded.  Would be nice if true as we drink lots of bottled water in a day.

On our cruise a couple of weeks ago we were ordering up to 4 bottles of water each per day and we payed nothing for them. We had the plan.

Alcoholic drinks max 15 per day with unlimited specialty coffees, teas, water and sodas.

As @voljeep mentioned earlier “ at Princess’s discretion” for additional alcoholic beverages.

Does the Discretion mean if you are still standing after 15 drinks ? 🙂

I've just spotted The Riverside online, have stayed at the Hilton Marina a couple times in the past but I like what the Riverside looks like (at least on their website) and the price is reasonable for Oct 2024. Is it close enough to airport and cruiseport to make it worthwhile?

The Hilton Marina is a nice hotel, but higher prices, breakfast is not included, the buffet comes to $70.00 for two people with gratuity added.

You laugh (and it is funny), but on a past cruise I have seen crew wearing hazmat suits enter a cabin just down the hall from us.  Noro.  An eye-opener.

I remember having issues once after eating bad food, when I went to the ships med center I asked if it might be noro.  She asked me if I made it to the toilet, when I said yes, she said no it’s not noro 😳
