  1. Help, but not usually being a user of TAs apart from our family USA California excursion a few years ago could anyone enlighten me about TA supplied OBC.

Does the OBC come from the company they are booking you up with or from the TA.  Am I wrong in presuming that part of the river cruise in this case is paid for to the TA. In other words how does it work? Please.

  2. The blue and white pottery has a long history and in this case is Dutch delft very widely collected I think a few European countries have their own versions we do in the U.K. It chips around the edges very easily so fully intact older pieces can be worth a small fortune. I’ve got a couple of pieces including a wall plaque but am loath to get it valued, I’d hate to be the custodian of something valuable as I’d be sure to drop it the next time I dusted it!

  3. Try an included tour and if you absolutely cannot continue with it before you leave it please inform the tour guide. He/She may not need or be concerned but if they are and have to answer to the ship it’s their head on the line. Also make sure you know your location as to where you are ship wise it’s really easy in a strange - to you - area to be not sure (note I did not say confused only to be used with us oldies) what direction the ships docking situation is.

I’ve seen cruisers return to a vessel wondering what all the fuss is about! Not realising that the company is about to be fined by the local docking agency for not leaving their mooring on time. River cruising may look cool and smooth but behind it is actually quite a slick logistical operation, your working with the Dutch and the Germans here.

  4. Yes you can leave the doors to the balcony folded back quite convenient actually and if for any reason you have a challenge moving them just call your butler, he/she might not arrive tout suite but someone will.
Pontac I actually challenged Scenic about the change of presentation of bathroom soaps and shampoos and yes it’s towards using less plastic etc but then did my own research, see it pays being an archivist (research, research, research,) I quite like L’Occitane as a brand although in the higher price bracket wherever you are but ESPA in the U.K. is even more so, although apart from that I do agree with the less use of plastic whether it be 1 star or 5 star.

  5. Don’t mention that anywhere near the hearing of my DH on our last Scenic Rhône cruise we had an afternoon on board with one of the last two French Silk Ateliers hence this

Sorry if this is copied as I seem to have lost the start, this was an afternoon in Lyon on board our Scenic cruise it ticked every box, fabric, silk, scarves, Jean Cocteau but also hit DH’s pocket, well he did say choose a scarf (I love them) it was one of the last two silk ateliers in France or so they said, beautiful designs and superb fabric. DH blames my mum who unlike myself was tiny and elegant and before WW2 trained  with Hartnell one of the top London fashion houses.

  6. Walk out as soon as a potential TA says something like ‘oh I don’t think you can do that’ or ‘oh I didn’t know you could do that’ or when you realise that you’ve actually traveled more than your potential TA. It really is a case of finding someone you’re happy to work with as they’re potentially helping you spend a large wack of your hard earned cash! Good luck!

  7. I don’t think it matters how high or low the abv is as long as it suites your palette. I’m amazed at how the world’s winemakers have in their various ways educated us and changed their product so that these days it’s not necessarily that difficult to choose an acceptable wine. I’m no expert but I know what I like as in I’m glad the French are again producing some really acceptable Malbacs. Think back to the 60’s and 70’s and Blue Nun! I’m pretty sure it was nearly 100% water, believe it or not we were served it last year at a function in and it wasn’t a bad drop and no I was not wearing a mini skirt and kinky boots.

  8. Then you are well within your rights to point this out in no uncertain manner, first as hopefully the staff have been informed about your preferences and secondly your dietary requirements. There is no way this kind of thing should happen as I know this is your choice but say you had an intolerance to any meat that could cause real health problems what then. We’ve had a few really awful cases in the U.K. over the past few years leading to death so any food provider should absolutely aware of choices and intolerances. Sorry rant for the day I’m lucky I don’t seem to have any at the moment but taking Girl Guides to camp meant it was a live subject all the time we were away.

  9. I’ve encountered meat and fish on the same plate basically all over the world. In the U.K. the colloquial expression is ‘surf & turf’. If it were me and had your preferences I would have gently reminded the servers of my preferences because as it was it does seem to have caused a real blot on your enjoyment of your cruise, such a pity.
