  1. My DH and I will be sailing out of San Juan next Sunday. We want to watch our Chiefs play that day. Would we be able to watch it on board? I'm guessing not since the game starts about 8 hours before we leave port. In that case, is there anywhere near the port where we could catch the game?

Also, the Chiefs play on Thursday Night Football that week. Does AOS have the NFL Network?

I've never seen the NFL network. They do show a game somewhere on board most ships I've been on. It will be hit and miss for Sunday games in some bars and on the in-cabin TV. Of course they will probably have the Monday Night, Thursday Night and Sunday Night games in some of the bars. I've seen the Monday night game on the big screen by the pool (Voyager or Mariner).

  2. I just returned from the Freedom of the Sea cruise. Had a promenade room on deck 8 above the Bull and Bear pub. Never had a noise issue even with the music going on late into the night. I had friends on deck 6 and never heard them complain of noise from the promenade. I did not find the room small with the beds together but I believe if they are separated it would take up more space. Otherwise loved the cabin and would book one again when I get a chance.

I agree (except for the one cruise mentioned with the late night 70's party). I forgot to add that my only complaint noise-wise is when there are fellow cruisers and sometimes staff members who let their doors slam constantly. Sometimes if you are near a family with small kids, they will slam their doors. I believe this to be the loudest issue you may encounter.

  3. We have stayed in promenade rooms often and you can hear the "muffled" music from the parade. This has not been a problem for us except one particular cruise where they did the 70's party later than the other cruises we had been on. It was very late (I think it was Voyager). Also, the lower deck is louder so we always try for the top level or the next one down (I think that's deck 7 or 8) - mid-ship and not above a late night bar.

I agree with another poster that it's sometimes fun to watch the goings on below....

We are booked in a promenade on the Freedom in May....

  4. OK So everyone is singing the praises of the aft cabin. Here is another opinion.

We booked an aft cabin on our last cruise on the Serenade. We were on Deck 7 in cabin 7674 right at the end of the looooooong passageway. It really is a long walk but we really didn't mind the walk.

However, some of our at sea days were a little rough and the pitch of the ship is really exaggerated at the aft end of the ship. Sallie got a little woozy at times. Additionally, there might not be screws on the Serenade but you can still feel the vibration at times back there. If you are prone to motion sickness, you might want to reconsider. Otherwise, everyone is right about views, larger balcony etc...

We will always stay amidships from now on. Just our opinion.....

  5. I'm going to agree with you.

I'm keeping an open mind about DD, but having a hard time understanding how RCI can make such a change without any consideration to its loyal customers. While at work earlier today, I had a whole lot of time to sit and think about this. I've seen something like this done with loyal longtime employees of the company I used to work for. That did not turn out well.

LOL.... You call that work!!! :):):):)

  6. I think it depends on you. What is important to you?? Believe it or not, we took ONE Royal cruise on the Monarch of the Seas, I don't have it listed in my sig because I don't remember the date. It was just ok. The reason we won't take another Royal is the coffee was in big urns and not in a machine. The coffee was always luke warm and weak. We happen to love coffee. Sounds silly, but that is what is important to us.

What?? We love the coffee on RCL!! Always hot. Always strong! Never luke warm. Never weak.... 14 cruises!! Even on Monarch!! ??????????????

  7. Hare is a link to a picture of the pool, you can see the "bar" in the water under the bridge. Just out of the picture to the right, beyond the steps is the cocktail bar.

Do you have a picture of the whirlpools??

  8. My wife and I will be driving to NOLA on Feb 28 for our cruise on the Serenade of the Seas. Does anyone know where the Serenade docks, and where there is parking?

    Thanks!

We always come in the night before, stay at the Hampton Inn New Orleans,

3626 St. Charles Ave. TEL: +1-504-899-9990

About $140 a night and free parking during the cruise. Take a taxi to cruise port for about $10-$20 ... Easy!!... Parking is secure.

Call them to make sure they still do it.

  9. How come when I click on the cruise to see the price, the 1st person's rate is jacked up?

    Jimbo:)

Because the price they "hook" you on up front is the average of the full price and the half off second price. Sounds good at first because you are thinking the second one must be half of the "hook" advertised price. Not illegal but certainly misleading.

  10. Sometimes the same port can be slow or fast. Our fastest and slowest boarding were both at New Orleans. The first time we walked right on board at 11:30 with no lines. The second time, as Diamond with priority boarding, it was a mess but that was because it was the first cruise after a transatlantic.

All in all the boarding process was never really bad except the exceptions (IE: Norovirus, transatlantic turnaround, late arrival due to fog delays etc...).

  11. We always cruise during football season. Monday night football has been on the big screen on every one of our cruises since the big screens were installed. Before the big screens were installed, the pubs with TV's (such as Voyager Tavern) also play it. Of course it's on the TV's in the rooms as well.

On a cruise on the Enchantment, the ship even set up multiple TV's in one of the conference rooms for the playoffs (again, before the big screens)

  12. I travel every week for my job and stay in hundreds of hotels. As you can imagine, I have run across beg bugs during my time. Currently there is a major come back of the little critters. Believe it or not there are many, many hotels with reported bed bugs. Especially in the Northeast U.S.

I've seen bedbugs in Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns, Homewood Suites, Hilton Garden Inns, Marriott Residence and very expensive hotels such as the Hilton and the Ritz Carlton.

I always take many of the precautions already pointed out in this thread. One of the things I always do is check the bed bug registry at bedbugregistry (dot) com. They don't yet include Cruise ships but they do register people reporting them in hotels. I always check the registry before I book. I avoid the hotels with multiple reports.

Check the registry for reports before you book a hotel. You will be surprised how many reports are out there. The registry has all kinds of tips to look for the bugs and things to prevent getting the bugs. For instance, never lay your luggage on the bed....

    Cheers

    Terry

  13. Just off the Serenade 9 day cruise out of New Orleans. This was my first time on a Brilliance class ship. The ship was beautiful and very easy to navigate. I'm not real crazy about the centrum elevators being on the side of the ship, it seems kinda lopsided. LOL and I really miss the royal promanade, but that's just personal preference. The staff was some of the friendliest and most helpful I've ever encountered and we had a fantastic cruise.

I enjoyed the aerial shows in the centrum and the production shows. The ship has a cinema and I watched serveral movies during the cruise. (they seriously need to serve pop corn though) RCCL solariums are always a favorite of mine, and the one on the Serenade is beautiful. It only has one hot tub though and it was fairly small and always full.

We had my time dining and I made a reservation for a table for 2 every night at 6pm. We ended up at the same table every night which was great. Our wait team was fantastic. We ate in the dining room every night and the food was great. I only ate at the buffet a couple of times and thought it was just okay. I ate breakfast every day and most lunches in the park cafe, their muffins were yummy and I really enjoyed the sandwiches there.

We had an ocean view room on deck 3. The location was very convenient and we didn't have any noise problems. There was plenty of storage for 2 people. might be kinda tight for 4, but it could be done.

I'd be happy to try to answer any questions if I'm able.

We just got off the same cruise. We concur with everything you said. We also prefer the promenade on the other ships. Also, we love the solarium and missed the larger hot tubs of the voyager class. The Park Café also causes a lot more traffic in Solarium area. (food there was great however)
