  1. We were told on a cruise last year (cruise of Vikings) that ALL HAL ships are for sale 100% of the time for the right price.

It has been published that the Carnival Corp is looking to get rid of the old less efficient ships - Veendam and Maasdam would both fall in this category.  So no surprise.

I would guess that they have continued to sell cruises on these ships because they have no idea if and when they will sell.

Just like we were offered other cruises when they stopped sailing to Cuba, folks booked will be offered something else with likely some ‘perks’.

Although I have had two cruises canceled this year, I do not feel deprived as some others have mentioned - not to criticize them, understand. Different strokes and all that. Though retired, I am able to keep busy with "important" things at home and in the local area. We explored some local trails around Reno this weekend and today I will wash the car, then probably go grocery shopping. I figure I can live with the current state of things by taking care of myself and DW, and when "normal" returns I look forward to going on cruises once again.

What a great attitude and positive person!   We are retired also and have 5 cruises booked and have had two cancelled. . . I need to adopt your mantra-  “I am not deprived.”

    Have a blessed day.

  3. On that size ship, I know that the aft Neptune’s are smaller but the balconies are much larger.  I think there are a couple on deck 7 that are larger than the others because of the ‘jut out’.  I’m guessing that the aft are the 500 and the jut out is the 712. All the others should be very similar in size.

They changed the final payment date for my November cruise.  They did not change the date for cancellation penalty.

Same for us.   The final  payment date was bumped a month back but cancellation charge dates remain the same.  I will add platinum plan before the original payment date but not make final payment until the new due date.

  5. There are no balcony cabins on the promenade deck.   Not certain but don’t think there are regular ‘balcony’ options onboard Rotterdam- only Vista Suites.   Deck plans are available on HAL facts page so you can check there.  Vista Suites come with double cruise days toward Mariner status and beside from a couple of other small things they are really no different from a balcony cabin.

Special dining on HAL is limited to Neptune and Pinnacle Suites which have the Neptune Lounge and dine in the Pinnacle Grill (Club Orange on  Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam breakfast and dinner ) for breakfast. No special dining venue for balcony, Vista or Signature.

  6. The size is very similar.  Not worth the cost difference.(IMO) In the Vista Suite, the bed is next to the balcony  and the sofa closer to the door. . .  Some people prefer one configuration over the other.  I have had both and consider it equal.

What IS worth the difference is double days toward your Mariner status in the Vista Suite if you are close to a certain star level.  (Think 4 star - free laundry)

All subject to personal opinion, of course!

    Have a blessed day!

And yes, we do buy an annual travel medical plan that gives us up to $250,000 or medical and $500,000 of evacuation.  While we are willing to gamble (self insure) on cancellation we will not take chances on medical where our potential liability is unlimited.

Curious.  What company do you use for annual?

  8. I have been burned by Allianz twice.   Never again.   I know some people think that HAL Platinum is ‘not enough’ but I’ve never been burned by them AND they have refunded my premium paid when they didn’t sail.  1. Cuba 2. Japan 3. Alaska.   Will continue to use HAL Platinum.  Just my two cents worth.   Have a great day!

    Ready to sail again!

  9. I should add- we have cancelled a cruise and it was very easy.

Also, if you have a PCC they are generally very good about alerting you for cruise protection plans, final payment, etc if you let the know.   Ours puts alerts on our cruises and always calls or emails or does both.

  10. Yes.  As long as you booked a refundable fare and cancel within the cancellation period (it varies- so be sure to look at the schedule) you will be refunded your deposit and for anything else you purchased in advance.  Do not buy a cancellation plan until right before the final payment, if you plan on doing so as it would not be refunded.

  11. We were cancelled with the last group.  We are waiting for the FCC to be applied to our Mariner #s.  Then we will apply $ and OBC offered to a new cruise.

Our shore excursions and misc items show refunded but have not been returned to our cc yet or have port taxes, hotel or fights.  May take a while- HAL has a lot to deal with.
