  1. Another reminder for France in July, Bastille Day is on the 14th. We were on a Uniworld river cruise last July that was supposed to depart Paris on the 14th (And then have a day in Paris for our last full day of the trip) but all the locks were closed & we wound up stranded in Paris for an extra day. Now normally being stuck in Paris for an extra day would be fantastic but since it was Bastille Day most of the things we wanted to see/do were closed & since we departed Paris a day later than we were supposed to we missed our day in Paris at the end. It made us wonder if it was just the locks around Paris or if most of the locks on the Seine, etc. were closed as well.

Also, Uniworld chose to tell everyone this at our welcome dinner-talk about a lot of disappointed people! Oh well, c'est la vie, we were still in France so we had a great time anyway:))

  2. Hi mapsd,

My husband & I took our 1st river cruise last year at the ages of 43 & 46. We chose Uniworld, they have several sailing dates/itineraries that are "multigenerational". Those specific dates run 1 tour at each port geared toward kids/teens, a regular tour, 1 called gentle walking (geared to anyone of any age who wants to take it a bit slower & one called go active for anyone who wants some extra exercise. Taking a multigenerational sailing date meant there were several people in our age bracket but they were traveling w/ their kids & we wound up palling around w/ people in their 60's & had a great time.

Next year we want to take Tauck's French Waterways river cruise, we know we'll be among the youngest on the ship but we don't care. We've taken 8 land tours with Tauck & have been among the youngest on all of them but traveling isn't about sticking to your own age bracket, it's about seeing the sights you want to see with people who have the same interests you do. Enjoy yourselves & have a great time!

  3. We're in our mid-40's & going on our 1st river cruise this July, we don't have kids but the only departure that worked for us on the line & itinerary we wanted was called a Multi-Generational Departure. It's on Uniworld & starts in Paris & goes to Normandy & back to Paris, they have several each summer on various itineraries & it should bring the age bracket down just a bit-might be worth looking into for your son. Hope this helps:)

  4. Hi,

While we have never taken a Tauck River cruise we have taken 8 Tauck land tours & I can vouch for how fabulous a company they are. We love Tauck & tried to book one of their river cruises for this upcoming August, the category we wanted was booked solid so we are going with another company for our cruise but if all goes well we may get to try that Tauck cruise next year, fingers crossed.

We booked with Uniworld, they are supposed to be top notch as well so we are really looking forward to out cruise!
