I'm having trouble getting information about these two ports. If anyone has been to one or both, I'd love to hear what you did. I'm sure the cruise line will offer excursions, but we like to plan our own adventures, so I'm looking for ideas.

I've been to Trapani twice. Once I went to Segesta, a lovely ancient Greek site with a well preserved temple and a theater. It was probably more than an hour's drive each way from Trapani but well worth the trip.

Second time I visited Erice, a small town that sits on a mountain just beside Trapani -- in fact, there is a cable car you can take on your own from Trapani up to Erice. Erice is a small, walkable medieval village with ancient roots -- easy to spend a half day there poking around.

I've also been to Cagliari once. I spent the morning doing a walking tour of the town (close to the port). In the afternoon I went to Nora, a nearby ancient Phoenician and later Roman site that is set right on the water -- very photogenic in the late afternoon sunlight. I went with a guide but there are good guidebooks available on the site.
