Hello,

I will be going on my very first cruise in about 8 weeks and I am in a power wheelchair. I am travelling with my fully able bodied wife and we were hoping to hear about others experinences in power wheelchairs. We are travelling to Alaska from Vancouver on the Diamond Princess. We booked an inside accessible stateroom L-250. Anyone travelling on this ship in a power chair? or with Princess cerruiseline in a power chair? Any advice is welcome :)

Charge it every chance you get.

The elevator & people at the elevator MAY not be your friend.

If you need to go down, maybe to the MDR, it may be easier to go up then down.

Or Vise Versa.

ASAP, check with the excursion desk to see what tours you can & can not do.

Some times they can arrange for a bus/trolly with a lift.

HI,

DH and I took our first cruise in 2010 - DH is a fulltime power wheelchair user. We absolutely loved it! It was so nice just to be able to unpack once and not have to worry about driving anywhere or moving anything! We sailed on RCI Rhapsody of the Seas so cant comment on Princess, but we wouldnt dream of anything but a cruise holiday after our first experience! We're booked on Radiance of the Seas in November and cannot wait!! I probably overpacked for our first cruise bringing everything to meet every possible situation that may have arisen from DH's disability and while it was good to be prepared our packing will be seriously reduced next time round!! I agree with Jackretired about checking out tours to see if they are accessible - we actually didnt check out any of the ports beforehand (newbies!), we knew that DH wouldnt be able to get off at tender ports but didnt expect any difficulty with other ports. Unfortunately that wasnt the case and he wasnt able to visit any of the ports we visited. This time we are using a TA that specialises in accessible travel and they have been brilliant at arranging shore excursions, access etc. Have a fabulous time on your cruise - you will both love it!!

Alaska is a good cruise for access. In skagway the train is very scenic and has a lift to the car and an accessible toilet once in the train car. In Juneau we used Orca enterprises for whale watching. They are very helpful with access and the boat was designed to allow access (and the whales were great as well).

We have L250 on May 26th and June 2 cruise on Daimond to Alaska. My husband I both use scooters. This is our 4th trip to Alaska we love the White Pass train and We also use Orca Enterprises for Whale watching works good. In Ketcxhican and Jeauneau we have been all over the ports on scooters-it does depend on weather.
