bangzoom6877 Posted July 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2013 Anyone just get off a cruise in the Caribbean? How was it during Tropical Storm Chantal? We're going on the Splendor on the 20th and who knows what we'll encounter...so I'm curious as to how the crew handled it and how rough the seas were. NCTribeFan Posted July 13, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 13, 2013 People sail every year in storms. Hurricanes and tropical storms happen every summer and fall. What one experiences on one ship may be totally different from what someone else experiences on another ship during the same storm! You could probably find dozens of review threads from the past few years that included comments about sailing in storms. I did my first B2B last October and ran into Hurricane Sandy. Missed a port on each leg; had some rough seas; some people were sick, others weren't. You know, the usual! ;)
Rena921 Posted July 13, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 13, 2013 Didn't seem like Chantal was that big of an issue and she is fizzling out. We have cruised during a hurricane with 25+ foot swells. Crew was awesome and they made sure plenty of barf bags were at the ready....taped to hallways, elevators, etc. We were 15+ hours delayed getting back into Tampa and got in after 1 am when we should have gotten in at 7am the previous day. Customs came on and cleared the ship and debarkation was a breeze. Luckily we were staying a few extra days in FL, but others were scrambling for return flights. That was our first cruise back in 2005 and we have been hooked ever since! Last cruise, our itinerary was totally changed due to a tropical depression, but it was still an awesome cruise. As long as you accept the fact that when sailing during hurricane season, anything can happen and go on your cruise with a positive attitude, all will be well! :)
rollissaria Posted July 13, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 13, 2013 We just got off Victory today. Because of Chantal, our itinerary did change, but the weather was perfect. We had a rainy start in Nassau but it cleared right up. All other ports and our sea day were perfect weather. They did a great job watching the storm and making sure we had a great trip! loxley Posted July 13, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 13, 2013 My advice is if you see barf bags out is to get one and put it in your pocket even if you feel fine. The urge can hit you quick.

bm6pm5 Posted July 15, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 15, 2013 Last May we hit a tropical storm on the way to the Bahamas and one on the way back. We were on the Glory from Norfolk. The boat rocked but was not unbearable. Probably 25 foot seas. We tried again last October again and caught Tropical storm Sandy. Which shortened our stay in Nassau and we skiiped Freeport altogether. Even pulled back into Norfolk a day early. The cruise after ours got canceled altogether. The boat stayed on the leading edge of the storm all the way back to Norfolk. It was rocking and rolling pretty good at times. 25+ seas and 40+mph winds. The crew both times was very good. Especially the October cruise as alot of people were upset with missing a port and getting one cut short. But we were still on vacation was our motto. Was pretty cool going up to the serenity deck and sitting behind the glass hearing the wind howling away.
purescottish Posted July 23, 2013 #10 Share Posted July 23, 2013 Was on Freedom and sailed through the middle of Tropical Storm Chantal, seas were smooth but lots and lots of rain, thunder, lightening and winds, they actually closed the top deck for a few hours, but it was an experience and adventure.. to be honest if you didn't look out the window or hear the thunder, you would never have known wendy x

I was on the Valor and we took a western/southern route from St. Thomas > Barbados. Captain usually said it's more of an eastern route.
Ironmen Posted July 23, 2013 #12 Share Posted July 23, 2013 We were very worried about it as we cruised right toward Chantel, but never felt a thing. Had perfect weather!
