JFK airport-things to do?

Recommended Posts

not much; you could watch the traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway.

Five hours alows you time to stay longer in Manhattan and do some stuff.

JFK is generally not in a great neighborhood so I wouldn't go to the local area to do anything.

We will be at JFK airport for about 5 hours before flight time.Is there anything to do besides shops and restaurants like movie theaters or something very close by?

What airline are you on? We flew on Delta & were lucky enough to be on business class so we got to use the lounge and it was great! I know you can buy a one day pass on Delta, so check into that. They had food, wine, booze & great couches & chairs. I think most airlines have these lounges, but not every one will let you buy a one day pass.

JFK is very spread out. Going from one terminal to another involves taking the monorail. Also, many of the retailers are post-security. Five hours really isn't THAT long a wait at JFK. Security screening and checkin is horrendous. That will probably take at least an hour.

Late reply I know, but I'm in the same boat. We're on Princess Cruise returning 7:15am on Oct. 19th and have a flight on Delta out of JFK at 4:40p. We also have a 7yr old so the bar/lounge option won't work. Any other suggestions that won't break the bank? If we were sailing out of Manhattan it may have given us more options, but this cruise is out of Brooklyn.

Anyone?

First of all October 19th is a Sunday so it will only take you 15 minutes to get over the bridge and be in downtown Manhattan...maybe 25 minutes to get to uptown manhattan. The biggest problem you will have is what to do with your luggage while you are doing anything, anyplace. Also 4:40pm is not as late as you may think since it will take you till about 9:30pm to clear customs and be off the ship. You will need to check in to the airport by 3pm or so and it takes 45 minutes to get to JFK so you will need to be on your way by 2pm leaving you with only about 4 hours to do something.

This is my recommendation because I had the same problem last week in London after getting off a Queen Victoria cruise at 9am and getting to Heathrow by 11:30 and my flight was not till 6:30pm. I am a member of the American Aitrlines club and we hung out there for the entire time. They have computers, TV's and even had a children area with computer games and stuff. Not ideal but it certainly kept us busy for extra hours.

Delta Airlines club is the Crown Room Club and if you are not a member you can buy a daily pass for $30.

Check with Delta but I believe that the $30 is the cost for the entire family. This may be the easiest and, cost wise, most reasonable way to spend your time.

From Delta's website regarding the Crown Club room-

Individuals must be at least 21 years of age for club membership or access.

No guests are permitted with a one-visit pass.

Looks like we're out of luck.

It's a tough spot cause I want to make the most out of the vacation and we really like NYC. True, Manhattan is only a couple miles from the Brooklyn port, but then the luggage issue. There doesn't seem to be any Princess sponsored excursions with transfer to the airports either. If we could check in the luggage early, we might be able to find something to do, then again I don't really want to pay $45 plus tip and toll each way from JFK to Manhattan by cab. Last time we could only check in luggage 3 hours early. Maybe a nice afternoon at JFK wouldn't be so bad. Or maybe I'll hit it big in the ship's casino so I don't have to be so thrifty about this.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Jay
