HOHO Rome

Call me crazy, but I liked it. I impulse purchased at the Termini station. It gave a great overview, had an audio tour, and I got on and off when and where I chose.

For a solo, the price was about the same as the cabs would have been. The Metro was further spread out than I expected and difficult to find the stops. I don't find myself stumped too often, but Rome got me. I already had a BIRG ticket but bought the HOHO anyway.

I think it works best if you start at Termini railway station. That is the beginning of the route. We started at the Vatican because we did the Rome on your Own excursion. When the bus got to Termini it sat there for absolutely ages before setting off again. We found it worked quite well apart from that.

The next time we went to Rome, we just walked around and then got a taxi back from the furthest point at the end of the day.

Yeah, the metro in Rome isn't particularly helpful for a tourist other than for arrival and departure (to and from Termini and Ostiense) or getting completely across town (to or from the Vatican). Line C, when it's completed, will certainly help (it will connect Colosseo on the B line with Ottaviano on the A line, more or less going under Corso Vittorio Emanuele) but walking will still be the best way to move among many of the key sites in the heart of the city.
