Chania on Sunday

Hi,

My cruise stops in Chania on Sunday, in mid October. It's a full day, from 8am till 10pm.

I'd originally planned to just wander around the town itself but on a Sunday is there enough to occupy the day (are most things closed)?

Should I consider any excursions?

Are taxis etc readily available or should I prebook in this case?

Thanks

I suspect Chania caters to tourists and most places will be open on Sundays. I just checked, for example, the hours of the local (and good) archaeological museum in Chania -- it is open from 8am to 8pm on Sundays.

Chania is a bit one-note for me, not sure I could spend more than a half day there. Nearby there are extensive ruins of a Minoan city called Aptera that is worth a visit (16 km out of town), would be easy to do by taxi.

If you're not into ancient civilizations, the larger and more interesting city of Rethymno (or Rethymnon) is about an hour's drive from Chania -- you could easily spend a day there but the taxi ride might not be cheap. Perhaps your ship offers transportation...?
