Need help with Montreal hotel suggestions...

Recommended Posts

We will be staying in Montreal for 4 nights prior to our July 2nd cruise. Would love to hear from those of you who live in Montreal or who have stayed in Montreal as to a suggested hotel. We're not looking for a 5 star price, but would like something clean and nice. I'm not familiar at all with Montreal, having never stayed there before, so am open to your suggestions. There will be 8 of us ranging in age from 5 to 85. Oh, if the hotel offers a handicapped accessible room, that would be a plus. Any other tips and/or advice you have is also appreciated!

Thanks!

Lucky you! ..you will be here during the jazz fest...one big party. You could stay downtown. There's a Marriott Residence Inn on Peel street. That should be good for a family...ask about handicap facilities...they must have them. You will be far enough away from the action to have peace and quiet, and you will be able to walk over to the festivities (those who could walk). There is also a Sheraton Centre, the Queen Elizabeth. Of course, there are more expensive and less expensive hotels. Any other questions...I will be happy to answer.

We looked at Trip Advisor (www.tripadvisor.com) for hotel recommendations. We like all suite hotels, and found rave reviews (5 stars) for five such hotels: Le St. Sulpice, Le Square Phillips, Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (formerly Hotel Suites Le Faubourg), Marriott Springhill Suites, and Marriott Residence Inn Downtown. For our Radisson Voyager cruise starting on September 16th we chose Le Square Phillips because it was the second highest rated hotel, had a quiet yet convenient location, and was much cheaper than Le St. Sulpice. Le St. Sulpice is in the old town not very far from the Alexandra pier cruise terminal, but we didn't want to spend that much.

Comments on these hotels by native Montrealers would be appreciated.

Last June, we stayed in the SprigHill suites in old town Montreal. Great location near waterfront, VERY freiendly staff, and extensive continenetal breakfast. Very pleased.

I don't know much about the others but the location of the Springhill Suites is excellent if you want to tour Old Montreal. As a born and raised Montrealer now living in the burbs, we make a point of visiting Old Montreal a few times every summer. It makes us feel like we are on vacation. It is so very quaint with a European style

Place Jacques Cartier is home to local artists, buskers, merchants not to mention some wonderful restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining. Do not be intimidated by the French language in the city. You will find English is spoken almost everywhere in the city.

The Old Port is wonderful to walk around and has some wonderful views of the city and across the river to St. Helen's Island.

Phillips Square is considered "downtown" although it is up the hill from Old Montreal. It is in a much more commercial shopping area, near Ste. Catherine St. which has many "American"...The Gap, Levis, American Eagle Outfitters, etc. but you'll also find some good Canadian stores such as Simon and The Bay (very nice multi-level department stores) and Roots.

Don't forget that even if the weather isn't great, Montreal is infamous for it's underground shopping malls. You can literally walk miles underground with stores and restaurants along the way.

Have fun...

I've never heard of it but I just checked out the website and it looks fabulous! It really seems to capture the old world charm of Old Montreal. It's in a good location to walk to the Old Port and Place Jacques Cartier where there are many restaurants (about 5 minutes) but not quite in the thick of things, just very slightly on the outskirts. (and I do mean VERY slightly) St. Paul is a beautiful cobblestone street. If you walk east from the Auberge there are also many shops and restaurants pn St. Paul street.

It depends what you are looking for...if you want to stay in Old Montreal then it's a good location. If you are hoping to see more of downtown Montreal then it's a bit of a walk up the hill (yes our downtown is actually uptown from Old Montreal)
