help with tours in rome

We had good luck using the hop on, hop off tours in Rome. The tours are narrated in a variety of languages and they give a good description of the sites as you drive by. For the coliseum we joined a group tour that was forming outside the entrance. This was also a very interesting tour with lots of background information. I found our tour of the Vatican museums OK. I had done a lot of research on the internet and thought we could do this without a guide. If I was doing it again I would reconsider this as the route I chose was quite long and had LOTS of steps (I have walking problems). A guide could have helped with this I think. St Peter's was wonderful and here my research paid off and I would do this again without a guide. I recommend that you consult the Europe board here on CC for lots of good suggestions.
