Travel Steamers

Has anyone used a Travel Smart garment steamer like this one at

I would like to know if anyone familiar with either of these travel steamers would recommend them and why or why not?

I just bought one, $40 on Overstock, not quite as small as the ones you're looking at. Does a good job on clothes w/a few wrinkles, not practical for something REALLY full of wrinkles, but I think it will be ok for traveling. I'm taking it on the Freedom in 3 1/2 weeks.

I bought a small travel steamer at Bed, Bath & Beyond last year for about $15. It works pretty well for something that isn't "full" of wrinkles. Works great for hubby's tux pants, my gown, etc. and it's about half the size of a regular iron.

I bought this steamer and took it on the Carnival Legend a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a complete waste of money. I ended up going to the laundry room to use the iron instead. Of course, I am kind of a freak about wrinkles.............maybe that's the problem! :p

I've bought 2 different travel steamers over the course of 3 years. Both ended up getting trashed.

I think they are horrible. The constant problem I have had is either the steamer dripping water or spitting water. Caused more problems then it did good.

So no more steamers for me.

Have any of you ever used either of these or know anything about either one of these? I'd love to hear from someone who has actually had experience with either one of these.

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Sunbeam-Garment-Steamer/dp/B00005OU01 and I love it. I use it on everything - about the only thing it does not work on is really heavy cotton, like heavy chinos, or on heavy wrinkle-resistant blouses. Everything else - wool, silk, cotton, etc., it's fantastic. I don't even use an iron at home anymore.

One of the previous posters mentioned that the steamer spit water - this can happen, especially if the steamer hasn't been used in a while. Usually what I'll do is after I've traveled somewhere, I'll use it first on something that can't get ruined by water, like cotton. After a couple minutes it works fine. I've taken mine on three cruises, and nothing's been ruined yet.

Rowenta also makes a steambrush, but I don't like the new design that much - I don't think it works as well.

I bought the Jiffy Steamer off Ebay for $69.99 for my cruise. It was great and worked exactly as I had hoped.

When your steamer arrives, use it a couple times at home before you go. There's always a little water left in it from when they tested it, and it starts to calcify - so the first time or so that you use it, it will shoot out little bits of solid stuff. That will go away after 1-2 uses. Do the same after you get to the ship, esp. if you're flying - there's something about 35k feet that makes the steamer 'spit' the next time you use it.

I tried to buy the sunbeam from Amazon but it is out of stock at the moment and I need something ASAP because I sail two weeks from today. Any other suggestions?????

I have the Jiffy E-steam and I absolutely love it. It works very well to remove wrinkles and folds but you have to realize its limitations (e.g., it's not going to take all the wrinkles out of a linen dress, for example).

I bought it for a cruise but like it so much that I use it at home quite a bit to touch things up. I use my iron a lot less now.

At home, I always try to use distilled water, as our water is very hard. I don't take it with me when I travel, but have been known to use bottled water to avoid any problems with corrosion of the unit, spotting of items, etc.

I finally dug it out of my suitcase-lol. It is a Travelsmart steamer. I got it from Target.com. You pay the postage and you can have it. I hate to throw it away, but I know I won't ever bother packing it again.

No, thanks! It's like the travel iron and iron/steamer I bought from Wal-Mart -- a complete waste of money. I've ordered the Jiffy Esteam Travel Steamer for more than I wanted to pay for this item, but several people on this thread and another thread commented that it works great.

Has anybody ever bought the My Little Steamer from HSN?

Yes, I ordered one about 2 years ago and I used it regularly in the mornings before going to work. One day it just quit. (We go through steamers pretty fast here--hard water and much use.) I went ahead and ordered two more from HSN. I like the steam pressure and it works very quickly. I now have one for home and one for travel. It's a bit bigger than the regular travel steamers, but for a little bit of extra suitcase space, I have a steamer that actually works. It also comes with a travel/storage bag so it's easy to deal with.

I got the Jiffy Esteam Travel Steamer and it works!

Any others? I dont travel much, so the jiffy is a bit expensive for me

I have the Jiffy too -- it's great. It was more than I had expected to spend on a steamer, especially when you see these other brands selling for $24.99 and such, but it's a sturdy, effective, no-nonsense product.
