San Diego Zoo Question...

About how far is it to the zoo from the port? I'm wondering if we should take a cab to the zoo and use my zoo discounts from work or take the ship's tour. Is there shuttle service from the port? I know someone asked a similar question about the Wild Animal Park and it seemed better to take the ship's tour. Thank you.

Cruise ships dock at the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal, right in the heart of downtown

so it would not be that far to balboa park area.. where the zoo is. I can't recall if there is a metro bus from there or not.. but you may want to check around some first

No shuttle, but it should not be more than $15 and 10 min. by cab from the port. You could take the city bus, but our bus system tends to be pretty slow. Tickets to the zoo are $32 for adults, $19.95 for children (without any discount).

You can take the bus ($2.25 fare each way per person) from Kettner and Broadway (bus 7, 7A or 7B) and get off about 2 blocks from the zoo...plan on 20-25 minutes. Kettner and Broadway is about 3 blocks from the port. Here is info on city buses and trolley system: http://www.sdcommute.com/

The San Diego Zoo is co-located with Balboa Park. I would suggest you take a cab, since buses do run very slowly here. The cab ride will probably take about 15 minutes. The Zoo is extremely large, and you may want to get a map before you go to plan your time. The Panda exhibit is really wonderful, and my favorite is the large Ape exhibit. Make sure to wear very comfortable clothing including good walking shoes. Once you get inside the Zoo, if you'd like a really wonderful overview of the Zoo, I highly suggest taking the "bus" which takes a preview tour of the whole Zoo. It is well worth the investment, and gets you a nice lay of the land. Then, chose which sites you'd like to see and enjoy. BTW, there is a lovely restaurant in the Ape exhibit area called "Alberts" which is really lovely and very good food. Enjoy the Zoo!
