Off the Pier...Puntarenas

Looking for some thoughts from those of you that have been to Puntarenas.

 

Is there anything close to the dock? Shopping, Beaches, Wildlife to see? Rent A Guy off the pier that can be a customizable tour?

 

I have been reading the tours and they all sound like a lot of time in the car driving. We are headed there in December with ours boys who are 4 and 5. The cost on these driving tours seem expensive for the boys...almost as much as an adult. I don't mind $100 for us but $65+ a piece for them seems high to me. Not to mention the boys sitting in the car for most of the day. Does anyone know of any alternatives?
